Douglas L. Cole (Deerfield, IL). Cole is Senior Vice President of Sales for Takeda Pharmaceuticals America, Inc., of Deerfield, Illinois. "It's impossible to go very far in anyone's sphere of family and friends without finding someone who is affected by diabetes," comments Cole. "I've been fortunate that my work has made me more aware of diabetes." Cole joins the Research Foundation Board of Directors with the conviction that prevention or a cure for diabetes will only be found through breakthroughs in scientific knowledge and research.

S. Daniel Johnson (Fairfax, VA). Johnson is President of General Dynamics Information Technology where he leads 15,000 professionals who provide systems integration, information technology, systems engineering and professional services to the defense, intelligence, homeland security, federal, civil, international, and commercial sectors. Now Johnson's granddaughter is five years old and provides inspiration for Johnson and others in their commitment to find a cure.

Mehmood Khan, MD (Purchase, NY). Mehmood Khan is the Chief Scientific Officer at PepsiCo. Dr. Khan first became aware of diabetes when his mother, who had type 2 diabetes, passed away at 58 years old. Prior to joining PepsiCo, Dr. Khan specialized in internal medicine and endocrinology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN among other highly regarded institutions. He is pleased to join the Research Foundation Board because the research will provide both near-term and long-term solutions that improve the lives of patients with diabetes.

Peter Kompaniez (Huntington Beach, CA). Kompaniez is the co-founder of Apartment Investment and Management Co., also known as Aimco. Kompaniez and his wife, Valerie, have been involved in the American Diabetes Association for many years, participating in fundraising and special events, such as Tour de Cure to support the Association's mission. They are the 2008 recipients of the Ross Hickey Award for Outstanding Service in diabetes Research Funding.

Founded in October 1994, the American Diabetes Association Research Foundation was created to substantially accelerate the Association's ability to raise major gifts to directly fund diabetes research. Over the years, the Association has invested over $500 million and provided funding for more than 4,000 research projects, with a continuing emphasis on training new investigators and pursuing novel strategies for curing, treating and preventing both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. In FY08, the American Diabetes Association Research Foundation invested approximately $42.5 million in diabetes research, funding 442 researchers nationwide at over 172 leading research institutions in the country. The mission at the American Diabetes Association Research Foundation is to ensure the availability of funds necessary for the full exploration of all the scientific possibilities that diabetes research is generating.

The American Diabetes Association is leading the fight against the deadly consequences of diabetes and fighting for those affected by diabetes. The Association funds research to prevent, cure and manage diabetes; delivers services to hundreds of communities; provides objective and credible information; and gives voice to those denied their rights because of diabetes.
