American Health Achieves HIPAA Trifecta

COLUMBUS, OH -- (MARKET WIRE) -- April 22, 2005 -- American Health Holding, Inc., a national medical management firm with multiple URAC accreditations, today announced its compliance with the HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) Security Rule. The HIPAA Security Rule is the third in a series of HIPAA Administrative Simplification regulations enacted by congress. American Health previously achieved compliance with other components of HIPAA related to the privacy of patient protected health information and the applicable regulations regarding electronic transactions.

April 20, 2005 marked the deadline for compliance with the HIPAA Security Rule. This rule complements the HIPAA Privacy Rule -- which dealt with the confidentiality of individuals' protected health information (PHI) -- in that the HIPAA Security Rule sets forth standards pertaining to the security of electronic protected health information (ePHI). Specifically, the HIPAA Security Rule states that entities like American Health must take reasonable steps to:

-- Ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of all ePHI
that is created, received, maintained, or transmitted by them.
-- Protect against any reasonably anticipated threats or hazards to the
security or integrity of such information.
-- Protect against any reasonably anticipated uses or disclosures of such
information that are not permitted or required.
-- Ensure compliance by their staff.

"American Health's compliance with all aspects of HIPAA is something that we can be proud of," states Larry Pliskin, J.D., American Health's head of Legal/Compliance and its HIPAA Privacy Officer and HIPAA Security Officer. "It makes us a better organization, improving our ability to service our clients and help patients, and enabling us to better protect sensitive information like PHI."
