AmericanLife TV Documentary, "Poverty in America" With Martin Luther King III Wins NECTA Chairman's Public Service Award

Chairman's Award to Be Presented During the 2008 NECTA Convention & Exhibition on July 17 in Newport, R.I.

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - July 11, 2008) - The New England Cable & Telecommunications Association, Inc. (NECTA) and their Board of Directors recently announced that AmericanLife TV Network™ (, the cable network devoted to the Baby Boomer generation, will receive the NECTA Chairman's Public Service Award in the category of Programmer: News and Information, Single Event/Special Feature/Segment.for their TV documentary, "Poverty in America." The award will be presented on July 17, during the NECTA Convention & Exhibition in Newport, R.I.

"Poverty in America," the documentary produced by AmericanLife TV, chronicles King's 2007 nationwide tour, through his Realizing the Dream Organization, to raise the social consciousness of the problems that are faced by some Americans. It is narrated by civil rights activist Andrew Young, the former mayor of Atlanta and the United States' first African-American United Nations Ambassador. King's mission was to begin dialogues with community leaders to help seek ways to combat poverty. The tour visited 35 impoverished communities -- including Washington, D.C., the Bay Area of California, Northern New Mexico and Appalachia.

"We are honored once again to be recognized by NECTA for our program,'Poverty in America,'" says COO Larry Meli. "This program was so important to Martin Luther King III in part because it was so important to his parents, Martin Luther King Jr. & Coretta Scott King and, along with peace and equal rights, was a cornerstone of their mission. In our on-going efforts to be socially responsible we wanted to bring awareness to a serious issue affecting our nation in the hope that it can make a difference."

"It is wonderful that NECTA is recognizing and honoring our important work on 'Poverty in America,'" states Martin Luther King III. "Obviously, America is not focused on this issue when our nation's homeless, jobless and the working poor continue to increase. My father's last major effort was called the 'Poor People's Campaign.' But, he did not live to realize the dream of a nation where every citizen that wants to can live free from poverty. That is why I founded Realizing the Dream, Inc., to continue his and my mother's legacies. Our nation must focus on this issue and look for viable ways to redress poverty. In a nation that's so wealthy, we should be able to accomplish that objective."

Martin Luther King III is chairman and CEO of Realizing the Dream Inc., a 501c(3) non-profit organization that continues the humanitarian and liberating work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King. Realizing the Dream, Inc. promotes and embodies justice, equality, and the 'beloved' community through specific sustainable initiatives in economic development, non-violence and conflict resolution training, and targeted leadership development for youth.

The New England Cable & Telecommunications Association, Inc. (NECTA) is a six state regional trade association representing substantially all private cable telecommunications companies in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.
