America's Wellness Doctor Defends Oprah

Applauds Her Efforts to Introduce Therapies Ignored, Vilified by Conventional Medicine

NEWPORT BEACH, CA--(Marketwire - June 17, 2009) - Oprah Winfrey has become the target of vocal criticism for her endorsement of alternative medical therapies. Newsweek savaged the media maven for highlighting "out-there experts" who endorse "questionable" theories and therapies. And medical authorities routinely ridicule her promotion of "unproven" medical treatments such as bio-identical hormones.

Others in the medical community, however, applaud Oprah's willingness to embrace alternative therapies. Julian Whitaker, MD, founder of the Whitaker Wellness Institute, the largest alternative medicine clinic in the US, says, "Just because a therapy doesn't fit into the financial model of conventional medicine -- i.e., patented drugs and surgical interventions -- doesn't mean it is without merit. Many treatments that are backed by scientific studies and years of clinical efficacy are ignored, even vilified, just because they aren't promoted by pharmaceutical companies or taught in medical school."

Response to Oprah's discussion of bio-identical hormones with guest Suzanne Somers has received especially harsh criticism. But Dr. Whitaker, who has been prescribing bio-identical hormones for decades, reports that they are much safer and better tolerated than conventional hormones. He says, "Which makes more sense? Estrogen derived from horse urine and progesterone that has been adulterated so it could be patented and assigned a hefty price tag -- or natural hormones that are identical to those produced in the human body?"

Whitaker continues, "We are bombarded by advertisements for drugs, many of them supported by flimsy research and burdened with serious side effects. I applaud Oprah for bringing some balance into the debate. She introduces audiences to a wide range of therapies, some conventional, some alternative. She uses her celebrity to educate and improve the health of her audience."
