AmeriCorps Grant to Strengthen Local Goodwill Family Support Programs

ROCKVILLE, MD--(Marketwire - December 12, 2007) - The Corporation for National Community Service has awarded Goodwill Industries International a $441,000 AmeriCorps*National Direct Grant to administer a multi-state program to build a corps of volunteers that will support the organization's family strengthening programs. The grant will be administered by local Goodwill agencies in six communities with some of the highest poverty rates in the United States: Atlanta, GA; Austin, TX; Grand Rapids, MI; Honolulu, HI; St. Paul, MN; and Wooster, OH.

"At Goodwill, we know that it takes more than a good job to move families out of poverty and toward financial independence and stability," says George W. Kessinger, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. "A parent's success often results in children that are better adjusted and more hopeful about their own future."

The grant will fund more than 35 AmeriCorps positions at Goodwill. The AmeriCorps members will recruit volunteers and help local Goodwill staff implement a range of family support programs, such as money management, child and adult literacy, and tutoring and mentoring for youth. Goodwill Industries International will provide technical assistance to the participating Goodwill agencies, a comprehensive reporting and evaluation system, and, ultimately, a volunteer management system that can be replicated at Goodwill agencies across North America.

"Goodwill recognizes that dedicated volunteers are essential to the long-term success and sustainability of community programs offered by nonprofit organizations," says Kessinger. "Our vision is to build a volunteer corps that is focused on Goodwill's mission-based services."
