AmeriCorps NCCC Teams up with American Family Housing to Aid in Construction of Potter's Lane for Homeless Veterans

New 16-Unit Housing Complex Comes Closer to Completion Thanks to New Partnership

MIDWAY CITY, CA--(Marketwired - Nov 10, 2016) - American Family Housing (AFH) -- a nonprofit organization dedicated to permanently ending the cycle of homelessness -- announced today that AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) has teamed up to offer much-needed support in the construction of Potter's Lane. The highly anticipated housing project, which is the first permanent supportive multi-housing development to utilize upcycled steel shipping containers to house homeless veterans, will provide permanent housing via 16 beautiful, 480-square-foot living spaces. AmeriCorps NCCC's involvement will allow the project to reach important development milestones in several critical areas, including plumbing, painting, landscaping and even decorating.

"The community needs us, and we don't have time for long development cycles," stated AFH president and CEO Donna Gallup. "Potter's Lane was designed as a model to help launch many more permanent housing communities like this one, because it's cost-effective and easily duplicated. Bringing a valuable partner like AmeriCorps NCCC on board only helps us make great strides that much quicker -- to get our homeless vets home."

AmeriCorps NCCC is known for its strides in strengthening communities through direct, team-based national and community service.

"Potter's Lane is an extremely important development for our team to help tackle, and we're honored to be a part of a project that directly supports our veterans," stated Amy Coonan, AmeriCorps Team Leader. "Our organization is drawn from the successful models of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s and the U.S. military, and we were built on the belief that national service programs work effectively with local communities to address pressing needs -- like the development of permanent housing for our veterans."

AmeriCorps NCCC began aiding in the construction of Potter's Lane on November 5 and will continue through December 21. Its contributions will extend beyond Potter's Lane, as the team will also assist in the rehabilitation of American Family Housing headquarters, transforming the space into a multi-service center.

American Family Housing is actively seeking additional sponsors and donors for its ongoing capital campaign. Corporate or individual naming opportunities are still available for the individual tenant residences and a variety of common spaces including patios, gardens and other areas.
