Amherst VON home support workers give CUPE a strike mandate

AMHERST, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwired - Feb. 5, 2014) - Home support workers with VON (Victorian Order of Nurses) Cumberland District have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action if they are unable to negotiate a settlement in their current round of bargaining.

CUPE National Representative Grant Dart says, "The vote was taken on Monday and we had 82 of 100 members vote. The results were 81 in favour of strike and only one against.

"That is 98% of those who voted. We hope this sends a strong message to this employer that the members of CUPE Local 3953 are serious about reaching a fair deal."

Dart says both sides have met with the conciliation officer once already and will get back together at the end of this month.

Says Dart, "We look forward to getting back to the table and, with this strong support of the employees behind us, are hopeful VON will come to the table as prepared to reach a deal as we are."
