The creation of Britain's newest and largest trade union with over two million members is expected to be confirmed this Thursday.

The general secretaries of Amicus and the Transport and General Workers Union, Derek Simpson and Tony Woodley, will publicly announce the result of the ballot on the merger of the two unions.

The postal ballot, which has been carried out by the Electoral Reform Services, has involved all members of both unions and has run from 7th February. The debates, discussions, negotiations and consultations have gone on for two years prior to this vote.

Speaking before the announcement, Tony Woodley and Derek Simpson said:

"This New Union will be a mighty force for progress in the world. When we stand together our opponents, bad bosses and callous governments, suddenly start to look much smaller."
