Amicus on Corus sale

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 18, 2006) -

Dave Gibbs, Amicus' national officer for the steel industry, said:

"Our prime concern is our member's job security and the security of their wages and pensions but so too is the future of the UK steel making industry.

"We'll be seeking urgent meetings with Tata and asking for assurances given our members jobs and terms of employment but we will also be asking the government to ensure that steel has a protected role in the UK economy.

"We believe that the government's defence industrial strategy which ensures key industries and skills should be widened to incorporate the steel industry. The UK defence industry cannot be allowed to rely on the import of essential raw materials."
