Thoth Technology and York U working to make futuristic concept a reality

Researchers at Thoth Technology have developed an innovative space elevator that can be constructed out of commercially available materials. As published in the internationally acclaimed journal Acta Astronautica, the actively guided tower would extend to at least 20 km altitude and provide a wide-area digital communications network that replaces existing Earth and space-based systems.

"Our concept is for a structure 30 times taller than existing skyscrapers," said Dr. Brendan Quine, Thoth's Technical Director and chief engineer for the project. "One of the secrets is to use gas pressure to support the enormous weight of the structure. It's the ultimate tall building and one of the greatest engineering challenges of the new millennium."

In contrast to the space tether concept popularised by Arthur C. Clarke, Thoth's concept may be very practical to implement. Together with York University, the team has developed a scale demonstrator of the structure that stands three stories high.

In addition to communications and orbital launch applications, the tower may have other uses. Dr. Caroline Roberts, President and CEO of Thoth, expects space elevators to become the ultimate tourist destination.

"Visitors will experience the blackness of space and the bright blue limb of the Earth with a view extending over a subcontinent," Roberts said. Compared with the extreme risk of rocket flight and the discomfort of zero gravity, the space tower would provide a safe environment to observe the world with slightly reduced gravity.
