An Inside Look at the Creative Departments Behind Your Favorite Brands

The 2013 Creative Industry Report Is Now Available

BETHESDA, MD--(Marketwired - June 04, 2013) -  The 2013 In-House Creative Services Industry Report, an annual survey of in-house creative departments, was released recently, revealing trends in hiring practices, attrition rates, insights on service offerings and more. The BOSS Group, a leading creative staffing firm; Cella, a management consulting company serving in-house creative leaders nationwide, and InSource, a membership organization and resource for in-house creative leadership, have partnered for the third consecutive year to produce the report. This year's survey included 425 leaders of in-house creative teams that represent Fortune 1000, middle market, and non-profit organizations. Survey respondents represent multiple industries including retail, government contracting, financial services, pharmaceuticals, higher education, and consumer goods and services.

Among the creative teams surveyed, 48% indicated that their companies generate more than $1 billion in annual revenue. Within the organizations represented, creative service teams are responsible for graphic design, production design, brand management, and print and web design projects. Other services provided by creative departments are social media support, video production and interactive/multimedia design. Hiring trends indicate that creative teams are bringing digital and multimedia skills in-house; in fact the percentage of interactive designers on in-house teams has increased 25% over prior year.

A key takeaway from this year's survey responses is that print production is no longer within the top three service offerings provided by in-house creative service teams. Brand management has replaced print production in the top three service offerings. Furthermore, print spend for in-house teams is steadily decreasing, echoing the shift from traditional marketing practices centered around print campaigns to more digital communication.

Additional Key Highlights from the 2013 In-House Creative Services Industry Report:

  • Comparable to our last two reports, approximately 50% of creative teams headcount remained the same, with more than a third increasing in size and only 15% losing head count.
  • 33% of creative leaders plan to increase their team's headcount
  • More than 90% of creative leaders are able to bring in temporary staff during periods of peak demand, in line with trends around creative teams' increased reliance on contingent labor for staffing needs.
  • Less than half of respondents have a dedicated account or project management role providing exclusive service to internal clients; indicating that implementing an account management function remains a key area of opportunity to improve creative team efficiency
