AnchorFree's Hotspot Shield VPN App Hits 10 Million Mobile Installs, 28.6 Billion Malware Threats Detected and Blocked on Android and iOS

Hotspot Shield, the World's Most Popular VPN, Has Also Saved Smartphone Users 102.9 Million MB of Bandwidth by Compressing Data

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwired - May 21, 2013) - A year and a half after its launch on mobile, AnchorFree reports that Hotspot Shield, the popular privacy, security and access app, has hit 10 million installs on iOS and Android.

Growing by 1.5 million new downloads per month on Android and iOS; AnchorFree's Hotspot Shield has become the #1 security app on the iPhone and iPad. Hotspot Shield is among the top apps in the productivity category in the Apple app store.

Launched in May 2012 on Android; Hotspot Shield for Android has outpaced the impressive iOS scale with its massive month over month growth. Two-thirds of new users are currently coming from Android devices. To date Hotspot Shield has detected 28.6 billion potential malware threats on mobile devices, including phishing and spam sites.

AnchorFree launched Hotspot Shield for iOS in November 2011, extending its popular security, privacy and open web access solution to mobile devices so far in 2013, Hotspot Shield mobile use has grown at 20% a month, more than doubling the number of active users since the start of the year.

"We have a lot of growth ahead of us," said AnchorFree founder and CEO David Gorodyansky. "The popularity of Hotspot Shield is testament to the increasing awareness among users that they need to protect themselves on mobile devices from a growing storm of cyber security and privacy threats. We are more passionate than ever about our mission of enabling secure access to the world's information for an addressable market of five billion users."

Hotspot Shield VPN, which is free to download, provides a secure connection between smartphones or tablets and the Internet, encrypting all mobile data, protecting the user's identity, and blocking malware.

In addition, the app compresses bandwidth, allowing users to download up to twice as much content at the same cost, resulting in user savings of 102.9 million MB since launch. The savings feature has become increasingly valuable in recent months, as carriers have switched to pay as you go plans, and roaming charges worldwide have skyrocketed, particularly in countries like Switzerland and Japan.

"We see ourselves as a must-have app for anyone using unprotected public Wi-Fi to access the internet whether that is in the local coffee shop, an airport, or a hotel," said Gorodyansky adding that the service is very popular among travelers.

Hotspot Shield is also used by travelers to access US content while abroad.

The 10 million downloads milestone was achieved roughly twice as fast on mobile as with the desktop product, which was first released in 2008. Still, Hotspot Shield continues to rack up impressive numbers on the desktop. In the past 12 months, the service has protected more than 50 billion pages.

Hotspot Shield provides the following services:

  • Security: Encrypts users' entire web session, turning all HTTP sites into HTTP(S) and making the entire web as secure as major banking sites. Protecting users in unsecure Wi-Fi networks and blocking malware in the cloud.

  • Privacy: Protects the user identity from unwanted tracking.

  • Access: Hotspot Shield establishes a secure tunnel between a user's computer or mobile device and the internet, allowing users to gain secure uncensored access to all Internet content.

  • Bandwidth Compression: Hotspot Shield compresses all traffic on the server side before sending it to a user's phone, allowing users to stretch their data plans.

Hotspot Shield is available for PC, Mac, iOS and Android. Once installed, Hotspot Shield will run in the background, protecting all applications, email, and web-browsing. For more details on the application, visit
