Angus Reid Strategies: Corruption a Big Problem in Every Country Except Australia and Canada

Angus Reid Strategies World Poll of 20 countries finds widespread perceptions of corruption and injustice Attn: Assignment, Political, Foreign Editors

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 17, 2006) -

- Majority of respondents in 18 of 20 countries surveyed said corruption was a big problem in their country. The only countries where majorities of their respective populations did not hold this perception were Australia (59%) and Canada (54%).

- Distrust in the integrity and fairness of justice systems is widespread. The majority of respondents in 13 of 20 countries surveyed said that not everyone was treated in the same way by their country's justice system. Notably, majorities in India (74%), China (67%), Saudi Arabia (55%), Japan (55%), Australia (52%), and Canada (51%) did not hold this perception. In Britain, the public is equally divided on this matter.

"The widespread perception of corruption across much of the globe does not present a healthy diagnosis for the state of democracy in the world," says Craig Worden, Vice President of Public Affairs at Angus Reid Strategies. "To function optimally, democratic systems require citizen faith in the integrity of the political and justice systems. Australia and Canada are notable for their ability to emerge from recent corruption scandals with this faith somewhat intact."

Angus Reid Strategies conducted this survey on behalf of Maclean's Magazine. Data for this study were captured between Sept. 22 and Oct. 6 via 5,800 online surveys among a random sample of the online population of 20 countries: Canada, U.S., Mexico, Britain, Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Russia, Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea, South Africa, Israel, Lebanon, Turkey, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. Two hundred interviews were administered in each country except for Canada, the U.S. and Lebanon where sample sizes were 1,200, 1,000, and 125 respectively.

Once the data was captured, samples were balanced and validated through demographic and voting data provided by national statistics and electoral results. In the U.S., Canada, Australia, Japan and the five Western European countries, samples represent the views of the general population. In the other countries, samples are somewhat biased towards the more urban, educated and affluent segments of the population. Surveys were conducted in domestic languages except for South Africa and India where English was the only language surveyed.

The total sample size has an associated margin of error of 1.3%, 19 times out of 20. In those countries where sample sizes reached 200, results can be considered accurate (19 times out of 20) to within +/- 7%. In Canada and the United States, the margin of error is +/- 2.8% and +/- 3.1% respectively. In Lebanon, it is +/-9%.
