The Anita Borg Institute Announces 71% Increase in Participants for 2016 Top Companies for Women Technologists

Industry-Leading Program Designed to Benchmark Corporate Diversity Efforts and Identify Effective Practices to Increase the Representation of Women in Technical Roles

PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwired - Jul 14, 2016) - The Anita Borg Institute (ABI), a nonprofit organization focused on the advancement of women in computing, today announced that 60 organizations are participating in the annual Top Companies for Women Technologists, a national program that recognizes companies committed to building workplaces where women technologists can thrive. The 60 participating organizations, up 71 percent from 2015, represent more than 1.3 million US employees, including over 540,000 technologists, from a range of companies such as Google, eBay, Target, Facebook and American Express.

Every company is a technology company
In its sixth year, Top Companies is the industry's largest source of quantitative data for the representation of women in the technical workforce. It is built on an industry standard developed by ABI and provides a consistent benchmark for measuring the same data across all participating companies. Ranging in size from 200 employees to more than 68,000 employees, participating companies represent various industries including consulting, finance, insurance, media, research, retail, hardware, software, and information services. On average, 53 percent of the workforce at participating companies is in a technical role.

"Today, organizations in every industry rely on technology to drive innovation -- yet fail to tap into half of the world's intellectual capital. Organizations must focus on recruiting, retaining and advancing women technologists in order to innovate and stay competitive," said Telle Whitney, President and CEO of the Anita Borg Institute. "Beyond repeating anecdotes, the key to closing the gender gap is hard data. Top Companies is the only program of its kind that shows how the industry as a whole is progressing, which organizations are committed to diversity and what programs work to create measurable change."

Measuring what matters
At its core, Top Companies measures the representation of women technologists at entry, mid, senior, and executive levels, as well as the recruitment, retention and promotion of women in technical roles. This year, the program piloted two new forms of measurement -- programs and policies and employee experience -- which will be integrated into the program from 2017 onward.

Winner to be announced at GHC 2016
Every organization that participates in Top Companies is a member of the Change Alliance, giving women technologists a trusted way to identify companies committed to building inclusive workplaces.

In early October, ABI will announce the Leadership Index, which lists the companies whose representation of women technologists is above the mean of all participants. The winner will be announced on stage in Houston on October 19 at the Grace Hopper Celebration for Women in Computing.
