Annual Symposium of RSC: The Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 14, 2008) - RSC: The Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada, in cooperation with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, will hold its annual symposium on Friday, November 14th, at the Museum of Civilization. The theme of this year's symposium is "The Cultures of War and Peace". This timely and urgent theme was selected because of its broad appeal to Canadians.

Among the presenters are keynote speakers Lieutenant-General (retired) the Honorable Romeo Dallaire and Dr. Jonathan Vance. The RSC has gathered more than twenty world-renowned specialists in this field, including scholars and artists who will conduct four panel discussions exploring the cultures of war and peace from an interdisciplinary perspective. Panel discussions will include Canada's participation in the two World Wars; continuing conflict in the Middle East; and the "war on terrorism". The Symposium will also host the premier of a quartet composed by Janet Danielson, which will be performed by students from the University of Ottawa. Canadian filmmaker Anne Wheeler will show excerpts of her films "The War Between Us," "Bye Bye Blues," and "A War Story".

For the first time in its 125-year history, the RSC will host university and high school students from throughout Canada who will participate as observers in the Symposium. The media is also encouraged to attend this unique event.
