Anoto Digital Pen and Paper Technology Receives a Clean Bill of Health in Nursing Home Care

BOSTON, MA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- May 14, 2007 -- Anoto, the inventor of Digital Pen and Paper technology, announces today its significant track record in improving the quality of care for nursing homes through its Digital Pen and Paper technology. Its technology has been deployed in more than 14 nursing facilities around the country.

The digital pen looks, feels, and writes like any standard ink pen but is actually a sophisticated data capture device using an infrared camera that notes its position on the paper as the user writes. The pen is then docked to a PC, where a complete image of the written document, plus additional information such as time-stamping, is uploaded into a software application, either as a single image, or with the handwritten content translated into data.

"We're thrilled with Anoto's Digital Pen and Paper and the customization Digital Pen Systems provided because it enables us to use existing work (standardized documentation and proven clinical reports) and to jump-start and accelerate our quality improvement implementation process," says Alan Gibson, Director, CQI and Customer Service, Country Villa Health Services in CA. "We were able to redesign CNA documentation and implement the Digital Pen solution all in less than 3 months, providing access to clinical reports immediately."

Digital Pen Systems, an Anoto partner, custom develops applications for many nursing home providers. Its On-Time Pressure Ulcer Prevention: Partnering with Quality Improvement Organizations project, funded by the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) in collaboration with the Institute for Clinical Outcomes Research (ICOR), Health Management Strategies (HMS), and California Health Care Foundation (CHCF), facilitates certified nursing assistants and wound care nurses' resident documentation using Anoto's wireless Digital Pen and Paper system.

"Using Anoto's Digital Pen and Paper technology in combination with customizing documentation forms and reports designed for the AHRQ-funded project has improved nursing homes' front-line care processes and greatly increased staff motivation. We are pleased to see that our customized Digital Pen and Paper application is enabling clinicians to make better care decisions in addition to helping residents stay healthier because of it," says Jason Soulier, President of Digital Pen Systems.

AHRQ clinicians use Digital Pen and Paper for daily documentation of resident care on customized CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) flow sheets to prevent, track and manage pressure ulcers at the nursing unit and facility level.
