Anterior Hip Replacement Using the Tri-Lock® Bone Preservation Stem

BOZEMAN, MT--(Marketwire - November 12, 2008) - In a live Internet web cast on November 20, 2008, at 5:00 p.m. EST, Daniel Gannon, M.D., will implant a Tri-Lock® Bone Preservation Stem through a direct Anterior Approach total hip arthroplasty (THA). The Tri-Lock Hip System is a new tapered-wedge titanium stem from DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. that is engineered to preserve the natural anatomy, to deliver predictable performance, to contribute to OR efficiency and to deliver a high level of functional restoration to patients.

The surgery will be performed at the Bozeman Deaconess Hospital in Bozeman, Montana. As one of the designing surgeons for the Tri-Lock Hip System, Dr. Gannon has been instrumental in surgeon education with this new product offering. DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc., a company that has taken a leading role in educating surgeons about the company's new products and procedures, is sponsoring this broadcast.

Traditional Hip Replacement Vs. the Direct Anterior Approach

Dr. Gannon will use the direct Anterior Approach to total hip replacement during this procedure. The direct Anterior Approach is a tissue-sparing technique for total hip replacement that can help people who have suffered for decades from painful osteoarthritis in their hip. With the direct Anterior Approach, surgeons approach the hip joint from the front as opposed to the side or back. The direct Anterior Approach allows surgeons to work between the muscles without detaching them from the hip or thighbones.

"The advantages of the direct Anterior Approach are that it allows for a smaller incision and less tissue disruption, when compared to traditional total hip replacement, which can shorten the recovery process. Additionally, patients may bend their hip and bear full weight sooner after this surgery than other types of hip replacement surgery," says Dr. Gannon.
