More than 1,200 New Businesses are Started by Women Each Day in the U.S.

Women are starting companies at blazing speed. The number of women-owned businesses in the U.S. rose by 68 percent, while the overall growth rate for companies was 47 percent, according to an American Express analysis of Census Bureau figures. Women are starting an estimated 1,288 companies each day, up from 602 in 2011-12.

Erin Andrew, assistant administrator, SBA Office of Women's Business Ownership, will provide an overview of resources and tools specifically available to women entrepreneurs and small business owners across America. The Office of Women's Business Ownership's mission is to establish and oversee a network of Women's Business Centers (WBCs) throughout the United States and its territories. Through the management and technical assistance provided by the WBCs, entrepreneurs, especially women who are economically or socially disadvantaged, are offered comprehensive training and counseling on a vast array of topics in many languages to help them start and grow their own businesses. In the upcoming webinar, Andrews will address the following topics:

  • The importance of empowering women entrepreneurs
  • Overview of SBA's National Women's Business Center network
  • Existing SBA tools for Women Entrepreneurs
  • Recent changes to SBA programs that will help increase opportunities for women entrepreneurs

AnyMeeting Delivers the Edge for Healthy Small Business Growth

New businesses started by women and men have proliferated, in part due to the challenging job market. AnyMeeting founder and CEO Costin Tuculescu commented on the momentum that he is seeing among small business customers: "Our focus here at AnyMeeting is on providing easy-to-use, affordable conferencing tools that enhance the growth and efficiency of small business -- a focus that is driving our own success as new small businesses emerge. Building on that mission, we're pleased to be presenting this valuable webinar series, together with Comcast Business, to further empowering small businesses to succeed."

Archived here, the first of the SBA series, entitled Resources for Growing Small Business, drew record registrations and attendance. Calvin Goings, regional administrator leading SBA's economic development efforts in the Pacific Northwest, discusses resources that help empower small business -- the backbone of America's economy.

"Today, more than half of working Americans work for a small business, and small businesses have created about 65% of net new jobs over the past 15 years," said Goings. "Small businesses are the drivers of innovation and competitiveness and they are the key to the long term growth of our economy."
