Apache CouchDB 1.0 Now Available for Free Download

CouchDB 1.0 Delivers 300% Performance Boost on Large Documents, Improved Stability and Unmatched Reliability for Accessing Data on Mobile and Network Edge Devices of All Kinds

OAKLAND, CA--(Marketwire - July 14, 2010) - Couchio (http://www.couch.io/), corporate sponsor of the CouchDB post-relational database, today announced the release of CouchDB 1.0 available now for free download at http://www.couch.io/get. This latest release of the world's most popular open source NoSQL document database helps developers better meet the demands of mobile data by offering a faster, easier to use and more reliable and scalable foundation for web applications.

CouchDB 1.0 delivers a range of new features and improvements based on feedback from the global CouchDB user community and customers, including:

  • Speed -- writes are 300% faster for large documents, compared to the previous release;
  • Microsoft Windows support;
  • Authentication system -- write CouchApps without having to create a user model;
  • Replicator options -- flexibility to use replication to build custom systems.

"Millions of people already rely on CouchDB as the data store for their personal information today," said Damien Katz, creator of CouchDB and CEO of Couchio. "In addition to scale, performance and reliability, the latest release of CouchDB is all about making life even easier for developers. Our new authentication system lets web developers quickly write Couch applications without first having to create a user model. Forget about defining SQL tables for users and writing potentially insecure code or plug-ins for users and passwords. Relax, we made all of that easy and automatic in CouchDB 1.0."

CouchDB is a free and open source document-oriented database. Unlike Microsoft SQL, MySQL or Oracle, it is specifically designed for disconnected use and has the ability to scale vertically across a wide range of devices. Even without an Internet connection, users can still access their data with CouchDB's replication and sync capabilities. Replication allows the information to be put back onto a device and when the connection is restored, CouchDB syncs the data with the cloud, so users always have the most up-to-date information.

CouchDB's growing user base includes high-profile companies, like the BBC and Mozilla, as well as individual developers. Most use CouchDB to create web applications and share data across platforms, benefiting from the cloud while keeping data available at the network edges on desktops, laptops, handsets and mobile devices of all kinds via replication and sync.

"Meebo has deployed CouchDB as part of our infrastructure since 2008," said Randall Leeds, server engineer at Meebo. "The 1.0 release is a testament to the quality of CouchDB's community and a well-deserved mark of stability."
