Apollo Advances Its Environmental Sustainability Program

TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - April 24, 2015) - In early 2014 environmental reports surfaced identifying water pollutants causing respiratory issues in aquatic wildlife. The reports focused specifically upon fish experiencing gill blockage due to polyethylene microbeads. Polyethylene microbeads are found in many of today's personal care products such as soaps, scrubs, lotions etc., as a low cost synthetic cleansing agent. After use, these beads eventually make their way through to city water plants, back into our environment.

Driven by a leading position in natural and sustainable technologies, Apollo had been testing potential replacements for synthetic microbeads for several years, well before general society was aware of the environmental adversity caused by the synthetic product. Apollo tested the efficacy and desirability of natural exfoliates in its pursuit to replace polyethylene microbeads including walnut shells, crushed peach pits, luffas, pumice, rice, cellulosic and variant scrub-like materials. All options tested provided some advantages however issues related to visual aesthetic within personal care products prevented progress.

After exhausting a vast list of potential alternatives, Apollo commenced testing beads made from Polylactic Acid. Polylactic Acid or Polylactide is a biodegradable thermoplastic aliphatic polyester derived from renewable resources such as corn starch, tapioca roots, chips or starch, or sugarcane.

Testing proved to be successful! Apollo's hard work in the research and development of curative resolutions has yielded a solution that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Our first environmentally friendly microbead formula went into production in 2014, commencing in anti-acne products and then in body washes.

Apollo's success in this endeavor represents a revolutionary and pioneering progression in the personal care marketplace.
