App Aims to Reduce Inventory Inefficiencies at the Department of Defense

codeREADr Scans and Concatenates Pentagon-Mandated Barcodes, Enabling Real-Time Inventory Tracking With Smartphones and Tablets

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwired - Nov 20, 2013) - The developers of codeREADr, a commercial barcode scanning app, have today announced adding the ability to scan Pentagon-mandated UID barcodes, concatenate the resulting data and securely post it to local or cloud servers.

By enabling smartphones and tablets to scan UID barcodes, the company aims to lower the bar for the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) and other defense-related businesses to implement inventory tracking with the labeling system mandated by the Pentagon in 2004.

codeREADr's announcement follows Reuter's Special Report: The Pentagon's doctored ledgers conceal epic waste published on 11/18/2013. In that report, author Scot Paltrow cites a Pentagon document showing that as of Sept. 30, 2012, "the DLA and military services had $773 million worth of supplies and equipment on order that was already stocked in excess amounts on warehouse shelves."

According to the article, the Pentagon-mandated labeling system was designed to alleviate such excesses but the DLA felt the cost outweighed the benefits. "To date, the DLA has ignored the directive to use the system," according to Paltrow.

"Purpose-built mobile computers were typically required to quickly and accurately scan UID barcodes. Our goal is to allow the defense industry to compliment those devices with lower cost iOS and Android devices so inventory tracking can be less expensive, more frequent and conducted anywhere, whether in warehouses or in the field," said Rich Eicher, codeREADr's CEO.

The app's SD PRO scan engine uses the built-in iOS and Android camera to capture data embedded in UID barcodes and most commercial barcodes. With its regex technology, the app concatenates the captured data for recording to or validating against online or on-device databases.

In situations where internet connectivity is slow or unstable, the app works in the offline mode. For secure applications, the app bypasses codeREADr's servers to send data via SSL directly to client-managed servers.
