Appcelerator Enables a More Interactive Olympics Experience Through Rapid Mobile Application Development

As the Competition Heats Up at the Summer Games, Developers Turn to Titanium to Track the Race to the Podium

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwire - Aug 2, 2012) - Appcelerator®, the leading mobile platform company, today announced that it has seen a marked increase in the number of Olympic-themed mobile applications developed on its Titanium Platform in the last three months. With over 200 million Americans and billions of people worldwide expected to tune in to this year's Olympic Games, a huge opportunity exists to provide fans with a more interactive viewing experience. To meet this opportunity, Appcelerator's community of developers created a multitude of mobile apps that provide fans with an immersive Olympic experience.

"The ubiquity of mobile devices is enabling the world to experience the Olympics in a whole new way," said Gabriel Tavridis, senior product manager, Appcelerator. "Appcelerator's offices are 5,000 miles away from the Summer Games, but we are at the epicenter of mobile application development innovation with a thriving global community of more than 300,000 developers creating rich, immersive applications to satisfy the insatiable appetite of app lovers worldwide."

Leveraging Appcelerator's Titanium Platform, developers applied their existing JavaScript, HTML and CCS knowledge to get their mobile applications to market in time for the Olympics. Because the Titanium technology allows for up to 80 percent code reuse across multiple devices, developers were able to reduce the time to develop and deliver their Olympic-themed applications. In addition, developers integrated key features Appcelerator recommends for successful app adoption, including user interface defense, functionality, and ease of use.

The following apps represent a snapshot of the Olympic-themed apps developed on Titanium this year:

  • London 2012 app provides a simple, comprehensive way to stay on top of every Olympics event. It includes a Games directory with information on the date, venue, athletes, and countries competing in each event. It's been downloaded over 15,000 times and has an average 5-star rating.
  • Deck Pass app provides swimming fans with live results, athlete stats, and committee time standards. 80,000 members of USA Swimming are using the app to share their times and earn patches.
