Appcelerator's Hack-to-Help Charity Event Delivers Over $500,000 Worth of Custom Mobile Apps

CODESTRONG's All-Night Hackathon Benefits Ten Charities Including Michael J. Fox Foundation and Special Olympics

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwire - Oct 24, 2012) - Appcelerator®, the leading mobile platform company, today announced the successful development of mobile apps for ten charities at its Hack-to-Help event. Ten teams of mobile developers worked through the night -- from 9 PM Sunday to 9 AM Monday at Appcelerator's CODESTRONG conference in San Francisco -- to deliver a combined $500,000 worth of custom mobile apps. These mobile apps -- developed for both iOS and Android -- harnessed the wide variety of tools available in Appcelerator's signature Titanium platform, including native UI, integrated social feeds, and location data -- with each app geared towards encouraging donations and engagement with the respective charitable organizations.

"At Appcelerator, our mission is to empower our developer community to bring the richest mobile apps to market faster and more efficiently," said Appcelerator CEO Jeff Haynie. "This event really allowed our amazing community to pay it forward to some charities that are doing great work, all while demonstrating the capabilities of our Titanium platform."

"Hackathons are always great events in which to participate, learn, and share, but doing something on behalf of a charitable organization is such a worthy cause. I encourage all developers to think about participating in charity hackathons to make a difference," said mobile developer Ketan Majmudar of Spirit Quest. "The learning we came away with is to think simplicity when developing mobile apps -- even in a complex environment. Always start with the simplest solution and build up from there." Majmudar helped create the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation's app, which was built on Titanium.

The charities who received mobile apps at this year's CODESTRONG Hack-to-Help event are:

1. The Avril Lavigne Foundation - Partners with leading charitable organizations to design and deliver programs, raise awareness, and mobilize support for children and youth living with a serious illness or a disability.

2. JobTrain - An educational and training institution that also offers career counseling and job placement services to its graduates. JobTrain helps its clients launch new careers and break out of the community's existing cycle of poverty, low education levels, homelessness, drugs, crime, and prison.

4. The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research - Aims to accelerate the discovery of a cure for Parkinson's disease as well as to improve therapies for patients living with the disease today.

5. Mona Foundation - Supports communities in becoming agents of change in their own social and economic development by establishing long-term partnerships with locally based educational initiatives in the USA and around the world. 6.  Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation - A groundbreaking cancer research organization, the mission of the MMRF is to relentlessly pursue innovative means that accelerate the development of next-generation multiple myeloma treatments to extend the lives of patients and lead to a cure.
