Appian Announces Strong Growth in Q1 2011

Best Quarter in Company History With More Than 200 Percent Increase Over Q1 2010

RESTON, VA--(Marketwire - Apr 14, 2011) - Appian, the global innovator in enterprise and cloud-based business process management (BPM) software, today announced continued growth through the first quarter of 2011. Q1 2011 was the best quarter in the company's history, with a 202 percent increase in software sales over Q1 2010. 42 percent of the quarter's software sales were for cloud deployment of the Appian BPM Suite, demonstrating Appian's continued leadership in Cloud BPM. Appian signed more than 20 new customers in the quarter.

New Appian customers in Q1 2011 included such well-known brands as C.R. Bard, Inc., and Husky Oil Operations, Ltd. Leading organizations selected the Appian BPM Suite for core business processes across Finance, Acquisition, Human Resources, Customer Service and other areas. Appian Cloud customers continued to cite time-to-deployment, no up-front investment, and seamless migration to on-premise as their primary reasons for choosing to deploy Appian software as a service.

Innovation Leader
Appian announced the newest version of its award-winning Appian BPM Suite, and its mobile BPM and social business interface, Appian Tempo, during Q1 2011. Appian's technology innovation continued to reflect the dominant inflection points in enterprise IT.

"In 2011, we expect to see transformative technologies make the critical transition from early adopter status to early mainstream adoption," said Frank Gens, senior vice president and chief analyst at IDC. "As a result, we'll see the IT industry revolving more and more around the build-out and adoption of this next dominant platform, characterized by mobility, cloud-based application and service delivery, and value-generating overlays of social business and pervasive analytics."

The new Appian release drives increased business value through a focus on Mobile, Cloud and Social BPM. The platform builds on Appian's heritage of natively-integrated process, business rules, reporting and analytics, content management, data integration and collaboration.

Delivering Customer Value
Appian is committed to its customers' success, and delivers industry-leading return-on-investment. Two of Appian's marquee customers received significant industry recognition for the success of their BPM programs and the value they have delivered to their organizations. Global IT Analysis firm Gartner, Inc. honored Appian customers UPS and Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) in the Gartner, Inc. 2011 BPM Excellence Awards. In addition, UPS won the "KM Reality 2010" award for a deployment that has improved operational efficiencies, enhanced customer service excellence, and generated significant cost-savings. Late in 2010, NSN was also named winner in the Global Awards for Excellence in BPM and Workflow 2010.

Appian president and CEO Matt Calkins discussed the quarter's results today at the Appian World 2011 conference.

"Appian is dedicated to BPM software innovation and delivering the highest-quality Appian Experience we can for our customers," said Mr. Calkins. "That focus on the fundamentals of value is generating excellent returns both for our customers and for Appian, and we look forward to continued growth in the future."
