Appleby College Launches Diploma in Global Leadership

Canada's Leading Independent School Enhances International Educational Program With Unique Global Diploma

OAKVILLE, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 22, 2011) - Appleby College, Canada's leading independent school, is proud to announce the launch of the Appleby College Diploma in Global Leadership, the first truly integrated global education program offered by a North American boarding school.

The Appleby College Diploma in Global Leadership was created to inspire current and future Appleby College students to embrace their role as global citizens. By introducing global perspectives and including real-world experiences and interactions in the academic and co-curricular program, Appleby will be providing its students with the skills and characteristics required of a 21st century leader.

"In preparing our students for success in this increasingly globalized world, we must ensure that they possess the vision, courage and empathy to confront the challenges and opportunities of global citizenship," said Guy McLean, Principal, Appleby College. "The curriculum we have developed is designed to open our students' minds, inspiring them to explore beyond their current communities and make a positive contribution both locally and globally."

Appleby College's commitment to international service and understanding is not new. The school has a long tradition of nurturing global awareness and leadership. In 1992 Appleby was one of the first schools in Canada to become a member of Round Square – a worldwide association of more than 80 schools whose students share a strong commitment to academic excellence, personal development and responsibility. Appleby's commitment to global citizenship was further enhanced in 2005 with the introduction of its International Service program, which has over 100 students and faculty participating in service projects in South America, Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe annually.

"It is very clear that all nations need for today's young people to be acutely aware of global issues. We have an urgent task before us to teach them how to then engage with the challenges ahead. Education that integrates global civic responsibility will serve not only the students but our global community," Losang Rabgey, Executive Director, Machik.

Students can begin working towards the Appleby College Diploma in Global Leadership as early as grade nine. As part of the Appleby College curriculum, all students will complete a number of the diploma requirements; however, those pursuing the Appleby College Diploma in Global Leadership will do so in a more integrated way. To graduate with the distinctive diploma, students must complete a language requisite, develop a global action plan, complete a global service co-op, live in an intercultural residence, engage in adventure-based experiences, participate in a global-themed co-curricular and achieve The Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award.
