Applied Biosystems Selects Comergent to Power Enterprise E-Commerce

Leading Biotech Company Signs Comergent as Strategic Ally for Improving Customer Loyalty and Sales

REDWOOD CITY, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- June 20, 2005 -- Comergent Technologies®, Inc., the leading provider of enterprise e-commerce solutions, announced today that Applied Biosystems Group (NYSE: ABI), an Applera Corporation business, will work with Comergent as a core component of its expanded e-commerce platform to enable selling and ordering processes with its customers and selling partners. Deloitte Consulting LLP will manage the implementation as part of a three-year, strategic initiative to improve customer service and increase online sales.

"We needed a single system to serve external customers in a variety of fields, as well as internal sales and service representatives," said Paul W. Fingerman, vice president of information technology for Applera Corporation. "Based on our business requirements, Deloitte recommended Comergent as that single system and intends to rapidly implement the solution."

Applied Biosystems is a $1.7 billion operating group of Applera Corporation serving the life science industry and research community by developing and marketing instrument-based systems, consumables, software, and services. Comergent will power an enterprise e-commerce system for Applied Biosystems' employees and customers, including dealers and agents, as well as entities that purchase via a procurement system or marketplace. The system will guide users through the process of product selection, configuration, personalized pricing, ordering, and tracking.

Deloitte Consulting conducted a rigorous needs analysis and vendor search on behalf of Applied Biosystems. Deloitte recommended Comergent based on its proven track record for helping companies increase revenue and reduce the cost of sales and operations, while enabling better and faster responses to customer needs.

"Applied Biosystems is a dynamic company in a fast-moving industry," said Mike Brinker, Web channel solutions firm director, Deloitte Consulting. "Companies are constantly challenged by the trade-offs between growth, time to market, continuous upgrades and expansion in product lines, improving customer relations, and controlling costs. Comergent has proven itself as the leading application provider in this market, and we look forward to partnering on another successful solution."

Additional criteria for selecting Comergent included rapid implementation time -- which increases Applied Biosystems' return on investment -- the ease with which business users could maintain the system without IT intervention, and its ability to integrate easily with Applied Biosystems' existing IT systems.

"We are pleased to have a partner like Deloitte leading the project for Applied Biosystems," said Jean Kovacs, president and CEO, Comergent. "This is a strategic, global project and, with Deloitte leading the charge, we plan to implement a more robust and scalable system in half the time it would take them to upgrade the system they already have."
