Appointment to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 27, 2009) - The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced the appointment of Peter Menzies as a full-time member of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) representing the Alberta/Northwest Territories region.

"Mr. Menzies' talent and experience in leading teams and managing high levels of performance make him an ideal candidate for the responsibilities entrusted to him," said Minister Moore.

Mr. Menzies is President of Menzies Strategies, a company specializing in media consulting and strategic planning, and has been a part-time member of the CRTC since 2007. He spent his career in the newspaper business and served as general manager of the Calgary Herald from 2003 to 2006 and as editor-in-chief from 1999 to 2003. His ability to effectively manage teams and deliver strong performances have earned him several awards, including a National Newspaper Award for successfully coordinating a special news series on constitutional reform.

Mr. Menzies is also well rounded in the Canadian arts and culture scene through his membership on the boards of Theatre Calgary, the Calgary Opera Association, and the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts. He is a graduate of Acadia University and studied journalism at the University of Victoria.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is an independent public authority that regulates and supervises, in the public interest, all aspects of the Canadian broadcasting system, as well as telecommunications service providers and common carriers that fall under federal jurisdiction.
