OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 28, 2008) - The Honourable Peter Gordon MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Opportunities Agency, today announced nine ministerial appointments to the Royal Military College (RMC) Saint-Jean Board of Governors:

- Chair - Retired Lieutenant-General Richard J. Evraire;

- Retired Major-General Richard Bastien;

- Mr. Dany Deschenes;

- Retired Colonel Michel Drapeau;

- Retired Vice-Admiral Jean-Yves Forcier;

- Retired Lieutenant Colonel Remi Landry;

- Mr. Julian Martin;

"I am pleased to announce that nine worthy individuals have accepted appointments to sit on the Royal Military College Saint-Jean Board of Governors," said Minister MacKay. "Their commitment and enthusiasm will help to guide the college into the future. Our educational institutions shape and define our leaders, and provide them with the knowledge and tools they will need to meet and triumph over the challenges ahead."

The RMC Saint-Jean Board of Governors has 19 members. The Minister is responsible for appointing the Chair and nine other civilians who encompass an appropriate mix of academic, private sector and public sector backgrounds. The Minister will appoint an additional civilian at a later date. The remaining nine, including the Vice-Chair, are ex-officio members appointed by virtue of their positions in the Department of National Defence or the Canadian Forces.

The Board will provide advice and recommendations to the Minister on matters relating to RMC Saint-Jean and assist in developing the strategic direction of the institution.

In July 2007, the Government of Canada announced its intent to establish the military college at Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu as an independent military educational institution with a primary mission to deliver a two-year CEGEP program, commencing in 2008.
