Aptara Mobile Learning Survey Reveals an Aggressively Emerging Market

First in a Series of Surveys Documents the Impact of New Media on the Training & Development Industry

FALLS CHURCH, VA--(Marketwire - October 13, 2010) -  An Aptara survey of U.S. learning industry representatives, primarily from Fortune 1,000 organizations, reveals that the mobile learning market is an aggressively emerging mode. mLearning, as it is more familiarly known, is the delivery of effective and concise learning courseware on mobile devices.

mLearning has the potential to help training executives who are under pressure to deliver courses that are neither location nor device dependent, yet must achieve the desired business results. Still relatively new in the training and development industry, mLearning's promise has not been fully proven.

A developing market is signified by general consensus of its value, significant early adoption, and a majority making plans to adopt. Aptara's first survey finds that all of these conditions are present within the mLearning market. The survey, conducted in the spring of 2010, is the first in a series planned by Aptara to document the evolution of mLearning among online and blended learning initiatives.

This first survey revealed three major findings:

  1. There is an overwhelming consensus that mobile learning can solve existing business or learning challenges.
  2. The percent of existing mLearning programs -- over 20% of respondents -- suggests robust early adoption.
  3. Of those who are not early adopters, a majority have near-term plans in place to employ mLearning.

"As mobile content and apps become common place, mLearning's potential to truly revolutionize how learning is consumed grows. Its on-demand nature meets society's expectation of convenience -- with content accessible wherever and whenever it's desired," said Dev Ganesan, President and CEO of Aptara. "Our first survey's results resonate with the steady, increased demand we're seeing from corporations who want their training content re-envisioned and re-packaged into apps for the iPhone, iPad and Droid. It's exciting to have a front row seat to the unfolding of this new marketplace, and to have witnessed the learning industry's progression from print, to digital, to online, and now to mobile apps."

Other results from Aptara's first mLearning survey include:

  • 18% of early adopters integrate mLearning with their existing LMS.
  • 75% of those planning to employ eLearning envision using a mix of converted and new learning content.
