Aquatic Informatics Launches Beta of Leading Edge Software for Index Velocity

Aquatic Informatics has been working with the US Geological Survey (USGS) and Water Survey Canada (WSC) to redesign the most full-featured solution for developing and managing Index Velocity ratings.

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Nov. 26, 2013) - Aquatic Informatics Inc., a global leader in providing innovative software for hydrologic data management and analysis, has announced the start of its AQUARIUS Index Velocity Beta Program. On December 3rd, over 200 customers will preview the most comprehensive solution on the market for computing discharge via index velocity at AQUARIUS Insider 2013, the company's annual user group meeting.

The index velocity methods supported in AQUARIUS for modeling and computing discharge were developed by the USGS to measure the flow of water in complex environments including backwater, tidal flow, bi-directional flow, reversing flow, small-gradients, and rapid flow changes. In 2012, the USGS Office of Survey Water published a Techniques and Methods (T&M) report entitled "Computing Discharge Using the Index Velocity Method." Today, the USGS is the global authority on best practices for the index velocity method.

According to the Aquatic Informatics Global Hydrological Monitoring Industry Survey, index velocity is the method growing most rapidly in popularity: over 30% of survey respondents reported using it. This year, an elite team of scientists, hydrologists, and engineers at Aquatic Informatics has been working closely with the USGS and Water Survey Canada to design the best-in-class software solution for building and running rating models based on the index velocity method.

The AQUARIUS index velocity solution enables environmental monitoring agencies: (1) to create reliable stage-area relations from cross sections and land surveys; (2) to synthesize mean velocity values from on-site discharge measurements; (3) to analyze multiple velocity inputs (e.g. from an ADVM) along with other possible data influences (e.g. stage, temperature, turbidity) to find and build the best possible regression model for mean velocity; and (4) to apply stage-area and mean velocity ratings to incoming data in real-time to automatically compute discharge.

Existing techniques for dealing with these tasks often involve the use of various tools and programs, including custom spreadsheets, statistical packages, file parsers, and regression tools. Using multiple tools makes the development of index velocity ratings time consuming and error-prone. The new AQUARIUS index velocity beta software supports all these tasks on a single platform.
