Aquion Energy Wins a 2016 Platts Global Energy Award

Aquion Energy has won the Rising Star Company category of the S&P Global Platts annual energy industry awards

PITTSBURGH, PA--(Marketwired - Dec 12, 2016) - Aquion Energy, Inc., manufacturer of Aspen saltwater batteries and energy storage systems, has announced that it is the recipient of a 2016 Platts Global Energy Award in the Rising Star Company category. The award from S&P Global Platts, an independent provider of commodity and energy benchmark prices and information, recognizes the achievements of a new or existing business that has moved into a brand new field within the energy or chemical industry. Winners were announced at a black-tie event held December 8 in New York City.

Approximately 170 organizations and individuals from more than a dozen countries were nominated for an award in 17 categories. Rising Star Company finalists, including providers of smart meters, cloud-based utility billing, financing for solar projects, grid-scale energy storage solutions, and biodiesel precursors, were businesses created since 2008 that have established themselves as key players in their fields. Judges for this year's award recognized Aquion for "helping to drive solar to the forefront by enabling alternative energy." While Aquion's safe, sustainable battery technology impressed the judges, it was the range of energy storage applications that boosted Aquion to victory. Aquion batteries currently power homes, businesses, and other facilities around the globe. Judges noted that this "small company with impressive technology" has "a head start" on its competitors.

"We congratulate Aquion Energy for its win of the Rising Star Company award," said Martin Fraenkel, president of S&P Global Platts. "The independent panel of judges was impressed with Aquion for its stand-out performance in this awards category and for its commitment to the energy industry's advancement."

Award judges also noted Aquion's tremendous growth. In 2016, Aquion installed its batteries in a 16 MW solar farm in Puerto Rico, completed a $33 million round of investor funding, and introduced a 24-volt version of its flagship 48-volt battery. "Aquion is honored to receive this prestigious award," said Aquion CEO Scott Pearson. "The energy market continues to become more complex and competitive, and the Platts Global Energy Awards highlight the critical contributions of innovators in the energy industry."
