Arbor Networks' Peakflow X® Platform Provides Network Security for Germany's University of Constance

Strategic Business Partner circular Leads to Major Deployment for Arbor

LEXINGTON, MA and FRANKFURT, GERMANY -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 26, 2007 -- Arbor Networks, along with its German partner circular Informationssysteme GmbH, announced today that Germany's University of Constance has deployed Arbor's Peaklflow X platform to stop known and emerging threats such as viruses, botnet army attacks and worm outbreaks. The Peakflow X platform will also help prevent unauthorized usage and maximize network capacity and application availability.

Arbor Networks, a provider of core-to-core network security and operational performance for global business networks, currently generates forty percent of revenue from international markets, much of it through strategic partner relationships like the one with circular Informationssysteme GmbH. circular offers a wide range of network, communication and IT security solutions to enterprise, university and service provider customers across Germany.

The University of Constance's dual goal was to secure their network against traditional external threats such as viruses, botnet army attacks and worm outbreaks while also improving their ability to monitor and secure internal network resources and applications. Since many students and employees use their computers both inside and outside the university's network, the risk of malicious program code infiltrating the internal network undetected was increasing. The University found that conventional security applications like firewalls, VPN and log evaluations were no longer able to reliably detect and mitigate against such threats.

"The threat of malevolent program code entering the university was growing daily and a lack of proper monitoring meant that we were increasingly unable to prevent unauthorized network access," said Alexander Krist, who is responsible for network and security solutions at circular Informationssysteme GmbH. "Arbor's Peakflow X is the perfect monitoring solution for heterogeneous networks."

"The big gain for us is the excellent network transparency. Problems had to be identified before by analyzing diverse logs and using different tools -- an effort, only executed in case of a concrete suspicion. The old logs are still in service, and in combination with Peakflow X, are much easier to understand," said Andreas Merkel, information technology manager at the University of Constance. "Peakflow X network behavior analysis capabilities are especially helpful when searching anomalies. For log entries that we had not able to interpret on our own, Peakflow X delivers an additional layer of context for a credible interpretation."

The Peakflow platforms are complemented by Arbor's industry leading support and services, most notably Arbor's Security Engineering & Response Team (ASERT). ASERT is a security monitoring service staffed with some of the world's most talented network security professionals.

Using RSS technology, Arbor's Active Threat Feed (ATF) automatically updates Peakflow X products, providing customers with early warning about threats facing their networks and automatically updates their products with these fingerprints. Armed with attack fingerprint information, University of Constance security managers can recognize, trace the source of the attack, analyze its form and mitigate its impact.

According to Andreas Merkel, information technology manager at the University of Constance, "The ATF service in Peakflow X supports the fast abatement of certain threat classes. For example, contacts to botnet servers can very easily be detected. Rarely have we seen such benefit from a complex tool in such a short time. We are thrilled by using Peakflow X. The operation is easy to understand, so even new employees can execute tasks immediately, that have been before associated with a lot of time and know-how."
