Architects Hawaii Ltd. Announces Leadership Succession

HONOLULU, HI--(Marketwire - January 25, 2010) - Architects Hawaii Ltd. (AHL), one of the state's most prominent kama'aina architectural firms, recently announced its leadership succession promoting William A. Brizee, AIA, CSI, CCCA, LEED®-AP, to chief executive officer and Bettina Mehnert, AIA, LEED®-AP, to chief operating officer. David A. Miller, AIA, NCARB, LEED®-AP, CEO for the past 10 years, now becomes chairman of the board and continues his architectural work as principal. Lloyd T. Arakaki, AIA, LEED®-AP, COO for the same period, also continues as a director and principal.

Brizee, a principal at AHL since 2003, joined the firm in 1995 as a project architect and manager. An experienced architect, especially in the retail and hospitality industries, some of his key projects include the Moana Surfrider, a Westin Resort renovation; the Ohana Islander Waikiki; Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel; the Turtle Bay Resort & Hotel; Lanikea at Waikiki; Royal Hawaiian Center revitalization; The Shops at Mauna Lani; Center of Waikiki and Pearl City Gateway.

A nationally recognized expert on building codes, Brizee was chairman of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Honolulu Building Codes Committee from 1997 to 2008; represents the AIA Hawaii Chapter on the State Building Codes Council; is an elected chairman of the International Building, Residential and Existing Building Codes Committee; and is on the International Energy Conservation Code Committee.

He is a board member of the Waikiki Improvement Association and chairs the Waikiki Special District Update Committee.

Mehnert is the first woman in AHL's 63-year history to be in a key leadership position, first as principal and director and now as COO. Born and raised in Germany, Mehnert started her career at AHL in 1988 when she moved to Hawai'i. In addition to her COO role, she will continue as director of Marketing, Information Systems and Human Resources.

Mehnert coordinates the firm's pro bono efforts, including acting as principal-in-charge for the recently completed renovation of the Salvation Army Family Treatment Services residential facilities in Manoa. She has architectural experience in numerous project types and sizes, such as education and institutional facilities, healthcare, hospitality, residential, commercial and light industrial projects.
