Arhaus Furniture Inks Lease Agreements in Maryland and Illinois

CLEVELAND, OH--(Marketwired - September 27, 2013) - This week, Arhaus Furniture has finalized two lease agreements for a total of 30,654 square feet. Next year, the Cleveland-based retailer will occupy space at The Mall in Columbia, Maryland, and Northbrook Court in Northbrook, Illinois, bringing total store count to 53 and 19 states at year-end 2014.

The space at 3110 The Mall in Columbia is 13,365 square feet (one floor) and situated in between AT&T and Soma.

With the Columbia store location -- slated to open in April 2014 -- Arhaus will have a total of four stores in Maryland; Baltimore's Harbor East store opened in 2007, the location at Annapolis Towne Centre at Parole followed in 2009 and another in 2011 at North Bethesda Market in Rockville.

At 1240 Northbrook Court, Arhaus will move into a 17,289 square foot space on the lower level in the former Mark Shale location, next door to Cole Haan. A grand opening is being planned for May 2014.

The Northbrook Court store makes for five stores in the Chicago market. Existing store locations opened in 2007 and '08, and include Arhaus at The Arboretum of South Barrington, 100 West Higgins Road, 1980 North Clybourn Avenue in Lincoln Park, Oak Brook Promenade, 3041 Butterfield Road, and the not yet opened location at Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, which the retailer announced earlier this month.

The Woodfield Mall store is scheduled to open in April 2014.

All locations show an assortment of product made by independent craftsmen all over the world. About the company's success, CEO John Reed says, "We offer the right combination of designs that Americans are comfortable living and decorating their homes with, and we merchandise them in the kind of environment that our customers not only feel inspired by, but comfortable shopping in."

Stores, ranging anywhere from 13,000 to 35,000 square feet, are beautifully outfitted in the retailer's one-of-a-kind designs and timeless classics including: sofas, sectionals and chairs wrapped in organic leather and custom order fabrics; dining tables and chairs for indoors and out; antiques and replicas; bedroom furniture and private label bedding collections; library and office solutions; wall units and an assortment of media centers for hi-tech gadgets; and a large assortment of seasonal accessories.

Interiors boast such architectural details as skylights, a river rock fireplace, hand-painted murals and a combination of distressed oak and stone flooring, as well as signature display elements like the Arhaus "chair wall" showcasing dining seats of every size and shape, and "accessory columns" stacked top to bottom with seasonal soft goods and glasswork. "Our build-out is like no other in the industry," says Reed. "We invest a great deal of time creating an environment that not only appeals to the shopper, but maintains our trademark look and feel."

The Arhaus ethos is all about workmanship and has been since 1986.

Going back to the beginning

The business is 25+ years old. It all started with a single store in Cleveland's historic Flats District. Arhaus is named after Denmark's port city Aarhus (pronounced ar-hoos). "We drove state-by-state sourcing materials and products, tracking inventory by hand and making personal deliveries," says Reed. "We were committed to finding good design, and going directly to the source was something that wasn't being done at that time."

Today, Arhaus continues to work directly with artisans all over the world. More than 60 percent of the assortment is made in the U.S.A. currently and this number is growing, according to Reed.

Making the merchandise

Details like hand-painted and distressed finishes, dovetail joinery, hand-hammered copper and eight-way hand-tied upholstery set Arhaus's merchandise apart from other home furnishing stores and make the retailer a destination in every market. The company's product development team travels the world to find its unique pieces. "We buy from markets in Paris and even from village shops in Indonesia," says Chief Creative Officer Gary Babcock.

And, artisans maintain the retailer's original commitment: to never to use wood from endangered rainforests in the manufacture of its goods. "Whenever possible, we rely on renewable and recycled materials to make anything from a single bench, to a glass vase," says Babcock.
