Army Cadets to Climb New Heights in Nepal

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 6, 2010) - Sixteen Army Cadets and four Cadet Instructors Cadre (CIC) officers from across Canada will participate in the Royal Canadian Army Cadet International Expedition from October 13 to October 31, 2010, in the Mount Everest region of Nepal. This annual expedition provides cadets with the opportunity to exercise self-reliance, leadership, and the spirit of adventure.

"I wish the best to the cadets and instructors taking part in this unique and challenging experience," said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence. "This endeavour clearly illustrates some of the amazing opportunities that are presented by participation in the Army Cadets."

"This expedition is a significant test of leadership and teamwork, as well as an incredible chance for personal growth," said Vice Admiral Bruce Donaldson, Vice Chief of the Defence Staff. "This once-in-a-lifetime journey symbolizes the unique opportunities offered by the Cadet program."

The Army Cadet Expedition is the premier activity that challenges Army Cadets to new levels, and is the culmination of at least four years of training, requiring a superior level of fitness and maturity. The expedition challenges cadets individually and as a group to improve their skills in decision making and problem solving, teamwork and co-operation, communications, resourcefulness, and time management. The chosen Cadets were required to meet stringent selection criteria that included national-level exams and participation in regional expedition activities.

The focus of this year's expedition will be on high-altitude trekking and backpacking and will introduce mountain biking and whitewater rafting under the guidance of both CIC officers and guides. They will begin their journey with an acclimatization day and mountain biking tour of Kathmandu city. The days following will include: a trek in Lukla in north-eastern Nepal; participation in a cultural visit to Khumjung and Kunde Sherpa Village(s); a trek to Everest Base Camp; glacier training; and whitewater rafting on the Trisuli River.

The Cadet Program is a program for youth aged 12 to 18, which is supported by the Department of National Defence in partnership the Navy League, Army Cadet League, and the Air Cadet League.
