Artie Buerk Named UW Gates Volunteer Service Award Recipient

SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwire - October 15, 2007) - Artie Buerk, managing director of Northwest private equity firm Buerk Dale Victor, was named the University of Washington's 2007 Gates Volunteer Service Award recipient. Buerk was recognized for his years of service and tireless volunteer efforts on behalf of the university at the Sixth Annual University of Washington Recognition Gala last month. The Gates Volunteer Service Award, one of the most distinguished accolades bestowed by the University of Washington, is presented annually to an outstanding individual whose exemplary efforts have encouraged others to support the UW through time, service and philanthropy.

"Artie Buerk has a deep understanding of the core values and mission of the university," said UW President Mark A. Emmert. "I have never met anyone so successful at matching leaders in both business and higher education with the challenges we face. Artie's high level of professionalism and his passionate commitment have translated into very effective action in support of the university."

Buerk has dedicated countless hours leading and serving on UW committees and boards and making important connections among UW supporters since graduating five decades ago. He has been a generous supporter of the university, most notably the Foster School of Business, where he created the Buerk Leadership Endowment and is the advisory board chairman. Buerk was a founder of the Foster School's Program for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (now known as the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship) as well as past president of the UW Alumni Association and an early director of the UW Foundation, where annual giving increased more than 3000 percent during his tenure as director of development.

"Artie is the UW's senior ambassador. There's no question about it," said Chuck Blumenfeld, executive director of the UW Alumni Association. "When you think about Artie's support, it's much more than the monetary contribution. It's his undying spirit, his enthusiasm, his advocacy for the university."

Buerk is a founder and managing director of Buerk Dale Victor where he serves on the boards of Ivey Imaging and Passage Events, two of BDV's 16 portfolio companies. He is also a member of the board of directors at Davidson Trust Company, former president and board member for Shurgard Storage Centers and former president and co-chairman of Northwestern Trust.
