Artist Stephen Winer Debuts New Collection, "The Pieces Series"

Works in Wood: The Art of Stephen Winer, an Exhibition and Sale of Original Sculpture

BUFFALO GROVE, IL--(Marketwire - February 3, 2010) - Chicago artist and designer Stephen Winer proudly unveils his provocative new collection, "The Pieces Series," at his exhibition: Works in Wood: The Art of Stephen Winer on Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11 at the Renaissance Hotel in Northbrook, Illinois. After more than two decades, this premier exhibition marks the artist's long awaited return to the art world.

"I feel as though I am alive for the first time in many years," says artist, Stephen Winer. "Having been out of the fine art industry since 1986, I can now approach it with a better understanding of myself, my work and my life. I look forward to every day knowing that I have found my calling."

With the new collection Stephen has rekindled his passion; something he feared he lost since his departure from the art world. Stephen's creative roots blossomed when he was in the Air Force as a computer specialist. It was at that time he first attended art classes. His professors were wildly impressed with his natural skills and encouraged him to follow his passion; advice he gladly took. However, after many years in the field and many successes, Stephen chose to pursue a career away from art. He worked in a corporate role for more than twenty-three years and tried ignoring his true calling. It wasn't until he endured a personal loss he realized he needed to reconnect with his dream and return to art. He left his job, rekindled the fire and once again opened his studio.

Stephen channels his passion into "The Pieces Series," a sophisticated body of work entirely handmade from wood. Each of the sculptures exemplifies an unusual attention to detail yet surprisingly is crafted with minimal preconceived thought of piece placement. From the beginning of his career, Winer constantly applied a geometric interpretation to everything he created. Forty years later this approach would be the Muse for his new collection. With "The Pieces Series," Winer surrenders the need to envision the final product and instead allows geometry to dictate placement of each piece.

"The Pieces Series" is just that; a series of varying pieces in different shapes and sizes that together create an intriguing wooden sculpture. As each piece is placed, the structure and artist's instinct determines what shapes should follow until completed. This method guarantees no two sculptures will ever be the same and allows the process to be organic. Once construction is complete, Stephen finishes it with his signature "Black Copper" painting technique to give each sculpture the mystique of cast bronze. "The Pieces Series" comes is a variety of sizes and interpretations, from interactive floor sculptures, to table and wall displays.

Guests are invited to view Stephen's Pieces Collection and meet the esteemed artist at "Works in Wood, An Exhibition and Sale of Original Sculpture." In addition to "The Pieces Series," Stephen's handcrafted furniture and whimsical "Birds Series" will also be on display and available for purchase.
