Arxan and Xamarin Extend Mobile Application Protection to Developers

Partnership Ensures Seamless Interoperability for Enhanced Application Protection With Xamarin-Based Mobile Apps

BETHESDA, MD and SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - Oct 8, 2014) - Arxan Technologies, the industry-leading provider of application protection solutions, and Xamarin, the leading provider of developer solutions for building fully native apps for iOS, Android, Windows and Mac from a single shared code base, today announced an interoperability partnership to provide developers with an enhanced application security solution that can protect mobile applications from hacking attacks and exploits. This partnership ensures companies can protect their brand, intellectual property, data and revenue from hacking attacks targeting mobile applications.

Through this partnership, developers can embed an incremental layer of self-defense and tamper resistance directly into Xamarin-based apps. The unique and enhanced application security that can be applied to Xamarin-based apps presents developers with industry-leading protection, from both traditional risks, such as vulnerabilities in code flaws, as well as from hacking attacks such as reverse-engineering and unauthorized code modification.

According to Gartner, "Perimeter protection technologies cannot protect what ceases to exist -- the perimeter, which dissipates in the mobile, consumer-oriented and cloud-oriented world." Gartner analyst Joseph Feiman recommends to "make application self-protection a new investment priority, ahead of perimeter and infrastructure protection."1

The collaboration between Arxan and Xamarin includes both:

  • A technical collaboration that enables seamless interoperability for enhanced protection of Xamarin-based applications with Arxan's Mobile Application Protection products

  • A marketing collaboration to educate mobile developers on binary-based risks that can lead to fraud, data compromise or brand damage

Arxan's solution for Xamarin-based applications has been tested and supports apps for Android, iOS and Windows Phone Series. Arxan provides a variety of guard types or protection techniques that can be introduced as a post-build step within the Xamarin Studio workflow to harden Xamarin-based apps. Some of these protection techniques include Code Obfuscation, Encryption, Jailbreak/Root Detection, Swizzling/Hook Detection, Checksum and many more.

"Arxan's proven application protection solutions enable Xamarin developers to benefit from incremental and cross-platform mobile application security," said Nat Friedman, CEO at Xamarin. "This seamless interoperability provides Xamarin's base of 750,000 developers with an efficient approach to layer in application security during the build process and before deployment."

"Mobile app security is quickly becoming the defining attribute for high-value mobile apps, especially among the ever-increasing threats and data breaches," said Mike Dager, CEO of Arxan Technologies. "We are excited to partner with Xamarin to provide mobile developers with enhanced security that leverages best-in-class application protection to ensure their end user's brand and intellectual property remain protected."

Arxan is participating in the panel, Mobile Security Best Practices, at Xamarin Evolve 2014, the world's largest cross-platform mobile development event. The panel, taking place today (Wednesday, October 8) from 2:30pm - 4:00pm ET, will center on how to best secure your sensitive data in the app, on the device, and over the wire -- with insights from Arxan VP of Product Management Vince Arneja and moderator & Xamarin Director of Enterprise Mobility Steve Hall, as well as fellow panelists and representatives from AirWatch, Good Technology, and MobileIron.

Also taking place at Xamarin Evolve 2014 is the workshop, Think Like a Hacker! Common Techniques Used to Exploit Mobile Apps and How to Mitigate these Risks, led by Arxan engineer Darren Cathey on Thursday, October 9, from 11:15am - 12:00pm ET. During this session, attendees will learn just how easy it is for hackers to leverage widely available third party tools to completely disable and compromise mobile apps.
