LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwired - Nov. 1, 2013) - According to the ABTA Travel Trends Report 2013, Britons would prefer to cut back on other leisure activities, eating out and purchasing electronic goods before reducing the number of holidays they take. As 70 per cent of holidaymakers who took part in the travel association's consumer survey also said value for money was essential, specialised luggage shipping company Send My Bag is reminding consumers to beware of expensive charges for excess and heavy baggage when booking bargains.
The 2.5 per cent increase in Air Passenger Duty introduced in April of this year and the ongoing rise in fuel costs continue to push up prices for consumers, meaning people are looking for savings where possible. For example, the trend for securing cost-effective package holidays that also come with added security in case of the provider going into administration has marginally increased. However, 39 per cent of holidaymakers polled by ABTA said they had booked a 'DIY' holiday last year and travel industry technology company Amadeus reported that 52 per cent of the 93 million passengers who travelled from the UK in 2012 used budget airlines.
It is upon booking flights separately from accommodation, particularly with such no-frills carriers, when the cost of transporting baggage can be an unexpected extra expense. The price of transporting heavier bags or more pieces of luggage than the company's policy allows can run into hundreds of pounds when shipping to the USA or Australia, and with low-fare airlines it can often become more expensive than the air ticket itself. Therefore, savvy travellers wishing to maintain the number of holidays taken whilst keeping costs down should consider utilising a baggage shipping company.
Adam Ewart, founder of Send My Bag, said: "It is clear from these latest figures that holidays are important to people in the UK, but trips must be value for money. It is easy to be enticed by cheap fares and then get caught out by other expenses, such as transport at the destination and baggage fees. Send My Bag offers a cost-effective service for those wanting to send belongings abroad, whether that's for a holiday, a business trip to attend a conference or a permanent move, and the door-to-door aspect removes the stress of handling the bags yourself. Shipping to the UK is also available from almost anywhere in the world, so the return trip with too many souvenirs is easily covered!"
