Ashton College Accepting Applications From Recent Immigrants for 2015 Lilian To Bursaries

VANCOUVER, BC--(Marketwired - May 20, 2015) - Ashton College is now accepting applications for the 2015 Lilian To Bursaries. Individuals who have immigrated to Canada within the past five years and are interested in improving their education by pursuing a full-time program at Ashton College are invited to apply.

The bursaries, presented in partnership with Canadian Immigrant Magazine, will be awarded to four outstanding students and cover full-time tuition for a range of Ashton College programs including: Bookkeeping, Human Resources, International Trade, Home Inspection and Sales and Marketing.

At Ashton College, we understand the importance of building a rewarding career and how difficult this can be for new immigrants to accomplish. With experience and credentials that are not always recognized in their adopted country, and the high cost of continuing education for international students, many immigrants' expertise, knowledge and skills remain underutilized. That is why Ashton College is offering new immigrants the chance to increase their education and advance their career prospects, enabling them to realize their potential.

For Giovanni Mata, a 2014 winner, the Lilian To Bursary was an opportunity to utilize his existing legal knowledge and experience as a lawyer in the Philippines by completing a Diploma in International Trade program. Giovanni is now working towards obtaining his license to practice law in Canada, and plans to specialize in international law. "The Lilian To Bursary allowed me to pursue my education in Canada. I'm grateful for the opportunity, and to know that others will have the same chance."

Another 2014 winner, Dayakshi Iyer, used the Lilian To Bursary to pursue a new career path. Dayakshi holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Development Studies from York University and recently completed Ashton College's Diploma in Human Resources Management online program. "There will always be a need for human resources professionals; every organization needs to attract, develop and retain employees in order to ensure success. Due to economic reasons, I would not have been able to pursue this field without the [Lilian To] bursary, and I'm so pleased to have been chosen."

The bursaries are offered in memory of Lilian To, a crusader for immigrants. Lilian was the long-time executive director and CEO of S.U.C.C.E.S.S, a multi-service community organization that provides assistance to new immigrants. After Mrs. To's sudden death in 2005, the bursaries were created to ensure that her work with immigrants continued by addressing the challenges they face when trying to secure a stable career in Canada.

The deadline for application submissions is August 31, 2015. Eligibility requirements and additional information is available at www.ashtoncollege.ca/grants.
