Assault of Staff Members at Saskatchewan Penitentiary


PRINCE ALBERT, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwired - April 23, 2014) - On April 22, 2014, at approximately 7:50 p.m. two Correctional Officers were assaulted in the Saskatchewan Penitentiary Maximum Security Unit. The injured staff members were evaluated and treated at an outside hospital. One inmate was injured during the incident and was treated at an outside hospital.

All three individuals have been treated and released from hospital.

The Prince Albert detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the institution are presently investigating the incident.

The Acting Warden has ordered a lockdown of the maximum security unit. All visits in the Maximum Security Unit have been suspended until further notice. Normal activities will resume when it is considered safe to do so.

The safety and security of institutions, their staff and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will investigate the circumstances of this incident and continue to work with the police.
