ASSIA Paves the Way for Software-Defined Access Networks (SDAN) to Virtualize Carrier Broadband Networks

ASSIA Releases Groundbreaking White Paper on Software-Defined Access Networking (SDAN) Ahead of Lead Stream Presentation at Broadband World Forum 2014

REDWOOD CITY, CA--(Marketwired - Oct 7, 2014) - ASSIA, Inc., a leading solutions company for broadband service providers, today announced the release of a ground-breaking white paper that details technology developments that can extend the benefits of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) to broadband access networks. The company plans to unveil more details around the principles, architectures and benefits of the technology it calls Software-Defined Access Networking (SDAN) at Broadband World Forum 2014, October 21-23, in Amsterdam.

SDAN virtualizes access-network control and management functions for broadband access, streamlining operations, accelerating service creation, enhancing performance, enabling competition among service providers on a share infrastructure and enhancing customer satisfaction with broadband access. SDAN is achieved by using a software layer to virtualize the shared access hardware (e.g., DSL Access Multiplexers and Optical Line Terminals) and to interface with the Operations Support Systems of service providers.

White Paper Provides Blueprint for Deploying SDAN
Deployment models for SDAN are captured in the comprehensive white paper, "Software Defined Access Networking (SDAN): Taking NFV and SDN to the 'Edge,'" which is now available for download from ASSIA. The white paper describes three key models -- Single-operator SDAN, Multiple-operator SDAN, and SDAN to the Home -- and provides detailed descriptions, architectures and benefits for each.

Broadband World Forum's Virtualization Stream Highlights the Growing Adoption of SDAN
The growing importance of Network Function Virtualization (NFV) in the access network, together with current research by global carriers and network innovators, will be addressed in Broadband World Forum's NFV stream, with multiple back-to-back presentations. Sponsored by ASSIA, the stream will highlight lead presenter Dr. John Cioffi, CEO and Chairman of ASSIA. The track runs on Tuesday, October 21, 1:40-2:00 p.m. CEST and multiple "Think Tank Debates" on NFV will follow.

A second, related stream, Access Evolution, will feature Dr. George Ginis, SVP Service Provider Marketing of ASSIA, on a panel in a debate, "Are Enhanced DSL Technologies Worth Investing In?" The session will take place October 21, 4:20-4:50 p.m. CEST.

ASSIA to Exhibit
ASSIA will present demos of SDAN at Stand C50 at Broadband World Forum. The Forum takes place October 21-23, 2014, at RAI Exhibition & Convention Centre, Amsterdam.

About SDN in Carrier Networks
SDN is a framework for the automatic and dynamic management of multiple network elements. Major carriers that already have announced SDN initiatives include Telefonica, AT&T, and Deutsche Telekom. Until early 2014, SDN control referred to the control of network functions that reside above the physical layer -- such as packet forwarding -- and in the carrier's data centers. However, the SDN framework also applies to access networks -- the traditional "last mile" -- where virtualizing access-network control and management functions results in enormous gains in service agility and reliability, particularly in multi-operator environments.
