ASTRO Studios Launches MINUS-8: Watches With a West Coast Vibe

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - August 08, 2014) - ASTRO Studios, known for designing the Nike Fuelband and the Xbox 360, has launched a new brand of modern men's watches. Inspired by the creative work ethic, ambition and lifestyle of America's West Coast, MINUS-8 is named after the GMT-8 time zone.

The MINUS-8 collection of boldly designed watches possess a certain masculinity and machine-like aesthetic, the accessory for the modern man in search of something distinctive and innovative. MINUS-8 watches are raw, crafted machines.

Utilizing an industrial process with inherent time dependencies, MINUS-8 stainless steel watches are PVD-coated, emphasizing the multiple layers, each with gradual shift in tone. The collection features four distinct styles with a sapphire crystal face in dynamic metallic and grey-scale colors.

Layer 24
The Layer 24 case is constructed of individual PVD-coated stainless steel discs stacked on top of each other and tightly sealed for water resistant capabilities. This process is not only unique to Layer 24; it also has never been done before. The layers streamline the exterior of the watch and add depth to a face featuring a 24-hour clock, weekday, date, month and standard three-hand timing.

The Layer possesses the essentials of the Layer 24 but with minimalistic face design -- a three-hand timing and a date window. Like the Layer 24, its arena-like case is made of layered PVD-coated stainless steel discs that create depth within the watch face. The backside case visually features the beautiful automatic movement.

The Edge is different as it's the only watch in the collection to feature a stainless steel link bracelet. The architecture-like face features a stopwatch that breaks time into minutes, seconds and tenths of a second. Five-second intervals are marked on the case exterior allowing for a precise time read. The entire watch body is PVD-coated stainless steel, featuring a monochromatic finish.

The Zone is the clean, pure spirit of MINUS-8. Its bold, split-case personality -- resembling a time zone boundary -- plays with the expected geometry of a watch face. With simple architecture and smooth texture this watch has everything it needs and nothing more.

When creating MINUS-8, the ASTRO team took on the challenge of creating a premium design-driven watch brand from concept to market. "Watches appeal to designers because of their long history as the first wearable machines and the task of blending technical elements with fashion," says Brett Lovelady, CEO of ASTRO Studios and co-founder of MINUS-8. "Our design team, lead by Creative Director Dana Krieger, began with a vision that reflected the lives we're living here in San Francisco. A life epicentered where technology, lifestyle and design collide to make magic."

Ranging from $198 to $578, the watches will be available on and select boutiques.

The MINUS-8 watch collection recently won a 2014 International Design Excellence Award from IDSA and sponsors: Fast Company, Core77, Design Bureau and Curve.
