ASU Eyes 'Healthiest University' in U.S. Status, Installs Precor® Preva

Friendly Inter-Campus Competitions Aim to Improve Student, Staff and Faculty Health and Wellness

WOODINVILLE, WA and LAS VEGAS, NV--(Marketwired - Jan 7, 2014) - 2014 International CES (South Hall 2 Booth #26923) - Precor®, top provider of exercise equipment to university fitness centers since 1989, today announced that Arizona State University (ASU) has installed Preva® networked fitness as part of its effort to create a healthier campus. Preva provides the quantified self services students, staff and faculty need to set, monitor and achieve fitness goals across ASU's Downtown Phoenix, Polytechnic, Tempe and West Sun Devil Fitness Complexes (SDFC). Users create their personal accounts on any of the facilities' Preva-enabled cardio equipment and/or the free Preva Mobile app, where they gain a helpful and motivating companion for their journey toward better health. With nearly 300 pieces of networked equipment, ASU is the largest networked fitness installation in the world.

"Quality of life on campus is dependent on having the right health and fitness resources available," said Tamra Garstka, Director of Sun Devil Fitness, Tempe. "Equipment variety in our gyms is just part of the picture, whereas Preva networked fitness offers a personalized fitness experience students of all wellness levels need to succeed for the long term. Each student who walks through the Sun Devil Fitness Complex doors has essentially their own 'personal trainer' keeping them on track toward their fitness goals."

ASU is the largest public university in the U.S., with a current undergraduate and graduate enrollment of more than 76,000. More than 12,500 staff and faculty members are employed across all campus locations. With a focus on improving the health and fitness of its population and becoming the healthiest university in the U.S., ASU has enhanced the quality of the fitness offerings available to students. This includes facility expansions and purchasing nearly 300 pieces of Precor P80 cardio equipment, such as treadmills, ellipticals, recumbent and upright bikes and Adaptive Motion Trainers® (AMT®). Preva networked fitness was installed to enable fitness program personalization and to unite exercisers across disparate campuses into one health-minded community. Since the re-launch, facilities have experienced a 15-20 percent increase in traffic.

Kicking off its newly updated fitness centers, ASU asked students across the four campuses to take the "Cardio Challenge," which lasted two months. Students participated by creating their own personal Preva account where they could begin logging their workouts. Students also were encouraged to download the Preva Mobile app, allowing them to enter workouts completed outside the gym into their log. Every student (up to 1,000) who logged 500 minutes, received a free performance shirt. The individual with the most minutes at each of the four facilities also won an iPod. The challenge was promoted in partnership with the Well Devils organization, a group of campus volunteers who promote a well mind, body, and community at ASU.

By late October 2013, there were a combined nearly 3,000 Preva account holders across all four campuses, accounting for 1,905,600 minutes or 31,760 hours of workouts recorded. Preva has also been named the official fitness tracking app of the Pac-12 Fitness Challenge being held in February 2014, which ASU competes in every year.

"Preva is a powerful way to connect multiple fitness centers together for a consistent user experience and greater sense of community," said Brent Brooks, Precor Vice President of Networked Fitness. "ASU is a shining example of how networked fitness can be used to promote better fitness through personalization and friendly competitions. This is an exciting development for organizations wanting to drive better health across large populations made up of all ages, fitness levels and across many physical locations."

As part of ASU's recently enhanced wellness initiative, the university also is encouraging students, staff and faculty to sign up for Microsoft HealthVault, a place for people to gather, store, use and share health information online. An integration between Preva and HealthVault ensures workouts logged with Preva can be automatically added to a person's HealthVault record.

Preva, the largest networked fitness platform of its type in the world, is deployed in nearly 2,000 fitness facilities in more than 50 countries across the globe. The preferred choice for networked fitness across gyms, YMCAs and other non-profits, hotels, universities and more, Preva brings fitness facilities highly personalized tools and experiences that empower the quantified self.

Preva also helps facility operators better manage their business by gathering and presenting equipment and facility usage data. Its communication tools, including in-workout messaging and RSS feeds, enable facility managers to reach exercisers in ways that inform, educate and increase revenue.
