ATCO Group announced today winning entries in the ATCO Play Your Part Art Contest. Thirty students representing schools across the Yukon will have their art displayed at the upcoming Arctic Winter Games. Schools will also receive prize money.

"Our goal for the contest was to engage and inspire students to celebrate the Arctic Winter Games and to capture their cultural impressions of life in the North," said Nancy Southern, President & Chief Executive Officer, ATCO Group. "The Yukon is known for its artistic talents and diverse cultures and the artwork we received captures the spirit, diversity and pride of the North."

As a Legacy Sponsor of the 2012 Arctic Winter Games and Presenting Sponsor of the Cultural Festival, ATCO Group invited every school across the Yukon Territory to participate in the ATCO Play Your Part Art Contest. Hundreds of entries were submitted for judging which represented more than 80 per cent of the schools in the Yukon; from Dawson City to Whitehorse and Beaver Creek to Watson Lake.

Twenty-four winners were selected by a panel of judges with representation from the Arctic Winter Games Host Society, the Yukon Government and Yukon Electrical (an ATCO company). ATCO Group will award $24,000 in prize money that will be used toward a cultural or artistic activity for each winner's classroom. The quality of the artwork was so high that the judges awarded honourable mentions to six additional entries which will receive a $250 award for their classroom.

"Staff and students at our school are excited about the ATCO Play Your Part Art Contest," said Silke Wissner, Principal, J V Clark School in Mayo, Yukon. "The opportunities to win a substantial amount of money for the classroom, as well as the art supplies that were sent for students to use, have really inspired participation. Our students and staff have taken this wonderful opportunity to find out more about the Arctic Winter Games and the sports that are part of the competition. We hope that these kinds of activities will help us to promote participation in the Arctic Winter Games when students are old enough to try out for teams."

A complete list of the ATCO Play Your Part Art Contest winners and photos of their winning entries are available on www.atco.com. The original artwork will be on display at the Yukon Arts Centre in Whitehorse during the 2012 Arctic Winter Games from March 4 - 10, 2012.
