ATCO Sustainable Communities (ATCO) announced today that it has signed a contract with Salt River First Nation to construct a gas station and convenience store in Fort Smith, N.W.T.

"We are pleased to work with the Salt River First Nation and Petro-Canada to deliver a state-of-the-art gas station that will meet the needs of the community," said Boris Rassin, President, ATCO Sustainable Communities. "This gas station will bring to the area a familiar brand, teamed with the quality for which ATCO is known."

The 3,100 sq. ft. facility will provide local community members, neighbouring communities and travellers with a well-appointed gas station featuring additional office space for commercial tenants, three grades of gasoline, diesel, a fully stocked convenience store and pay-at-the-pump technology. The project will also provide significant economic development, training and employment opportunities for the Salt River First Nation.

"This is a great economic opportunity for all members of Salt River First Nation and the community of Fort Smith," said Chief Frieda Martselos. "On behalf of Salt River First Nation council and members, I am pleased our partnership with ATCO Sustainable Communities and Petro-Canada is positive and healthy and look forward to working together on future projects."

Fort Smith is located in the southernmost part of the Northwest Territories, just north of Alberta and has a population of more than 2,500. This is the second project ATCO will assist the community in completing. In 2012, ATCO designed and built the Wood Buffalo Inn, a modular extended stay motel and local success story.

ATCO Sustainable Communities combines modern construction technologies with ATCO's long history of forming successful Indigenous partnerships to build facilities that reflect a community's cultural values while offering shorter timelines and reduced costs. By offering a design-build solution, the company can economically provide any facility a community may need, ranging from offices, schools and daycare centres to residential housing, hockey arenas and gas stations.
