Atheros Appoints New Vice Presidents to Lead Its Consumer and Computing Business Unit and Worldwide Sales Organization

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - August 31, 2010) -  Atheros Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATHR), a global leader in innovative technologies for wireless and wired communications, today announced two new appointments to its executive team. Gary Szilagyi has been named vice president and general manager of Atheros' newly-formed Consumer and Computing Business Unit (CCBU), where he will drive the company's growing presence in fixed consumer electronics and increase its long-standing leadership in the PC industry. Additionally, Rick Hegberg has joined Atheros as vice president of worldwide sales, and will lead efforts to strengthen and expand its customer relationships around the globe. Szilagyi and Hegberg will report to Atheros' president and chief executive officer, Craig Barratt.

From PCs and peripherals to home theater equipment and gaming systems, more consumer devices are becoming "connected" -- creating new opportunities for Atheros' wired and wireless connectivity technologies. Under Szilagyi's leadership, Atheros' Consumer and Computing Business Unit will continue to serve these growing markets by delivering solutions with the performance, reliability and simplicity that consumers and device manufacturers demand.

Szilagyi served as Atheros' vice president of worldwide sales from 2006 to August 2010, during which time the company nearly quadrupled its quarterly revenue and expanded its presence in the computing, mobile and networking markets. Prior to joining Atheros, Szilagyi led sales organizations at a variety of semiconductor companies, including Greenfield Networks, Marvell, Galileo Technology and Integrated Devices Technology.

"As we continue to diversify our technology portfolio and drive into several new markets, our business structure and management team is growing to keep pace with our upward trajectory," said Craig Barratt, president and chief executive officer of Atheros Communications. "Gary has been instrumental in our phenomenal revenue growth in recent years, and we are confident that his leadership and execution skills will drive further success for Atheros in the fixed consumer and computing markets."

Rick Hegberg brings more than 25 years of executive leadership and sales management expertise to Atheros. Most recently, he was senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing, and general manager of the Wireless Business Unit at Numonyx, one of the world's largest makers of flash memory. Prior to Numonyx, Hegberg led worldwide sales and marketing for ATI Technologies, where sales more than doubled under his leadership. After ATI was acquired by AMD, Hegberg was vice president for the combined company's worldwide sales and business operations. In addition to executive-level sales positions at Lucent Microelectronics, Trident Microelectronics, and VLSI Technology, Hegberg also served as president and CEO of NetOctave, where he grew the network security IC start-up into a global organization that was subsequently acquired.

"We are pleased to have such an experienced leader take the reins of our worldwide sales organization," continued Barratt. "Rick is a widely respected executive with a history of guiding leading semiconductor businesses through periods of growth. His expertise will be invaluable as we aim to take Atheros to the next level by strengthening and expanding our customer relationships."
