Atheros Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® Solutions Provide Best-in-Class Wireless Connectivity for Toshiba's New Tablet PC

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - December 6, 2010) - Atheros Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATHR), a global leader in innovative technologies for wireless and wired communications, today announced that its mobile Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® combination solution is delivering best-in-class wireless connectivity for the new Toshiba Folio 100 tablet PC. Toshiba is using Atheros' ROCm® single-stream 802.11n technology to provide high-speed access to media content, online applications and social networks, and its Bluetooth technology to easily connect the tablet to wireless keyboards, mice and stereo headsets.

Atheros is not only a leading supplier of connectivity solutions for notebooks and netbooks, but is meeting the growing demand for high-performance, low-power connectivity in mobile phones and other consumer products from major OEMs. As computing and mobile platforms converge, Atheros has optimized its mobile Wi-Fi and Bluetooth products to deliver an uncompromised wireless experience for tablets and other high-growth form factors.

Key Facts:

  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both essential features in portable electronics like tablets, which are one of the fastest growing device categories. Atheros offers standalone Wi-Fi and Bluetooth products, as well as combination solutions that provide complete wireless connectivity in a small, low-power, and easy-to-use package.

  • ROCm Wi-Fi and Bluetooth solutions are designed to have a near-zero impact on the battery life of mobile devices. Their highly integrated CMOS design enables the lowest combined power consumption. As a result, tablet users can browse the Web longer and enjoy more media files on a single battery charge.

  • With one of the industry's most extensive open software efforts, Atheros built its Bluetooth stack on the Linux BlueZ architecture, and has optimized its mobile Bluetooth technology for the unique usage models of tablets. Its AR3001 Bluetooth 2.1+EDR solution also includes additional support for human interface device (HID) profiles on the Android OS, which improves connections with keyboards, mice and other input devices, as well as the A2DP profile that enables stereo music playback on wireless headsets.

  • Atheros also provides innovative coexistence technologies that improve the wireless experience for devices that feature both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Its Universal Wireless Cooperation technology minimizes interference by facilitating greater cooperation between the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios. For tablet users, this ensures faster Web downloads and flawless media streaming over Wi-Fi, and glitch-free audio and input when using Bluetooth peripherals.

  • As tablets based on a variety of operating systems hit the market, Atheros' Wi-Fi and Bluetooth combination solutions support all of the major OS platforms, including the latest version of Android™ (known as Froyo), Windows XP®, Windows Vista®, Windows 7® and Linux®. This enables device manufacturers to implement Atheros connectivity in a full line of devices with different applications and price points.

  • To make it simple for Toshiba and other customers to add best-in-class wireless features to portable devices, Atheros' half mini-card solution provides the ultimate design flexibility. Not only can the same card accommodate Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth solutions, but it simplifies system design by decoupling the connectivity components from the PCB. In addition, Atheros has obtained all of the necessary FCC and international certifications, which enables vendors to quickly deliver wireless products that meet the regulatory requirements of multiple countries.
