Atlantic Provinces Korea Veterans Association Receives Federal Support for Commemorative Event

YARMOUTH, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - June 6, 2008) - The Atlantic Provinces Korea Veterans Association will hold a three-day event to honour the 55th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice and Veterans of the Korean War, thanks to support from the Government of Canada.

On behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Mr. Gerald Keddy, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and to the Minister of International Trade and Member of Parliament for South Shore-St. Margaret's, announced today a contribution to the Atlantic Provinces Korea Veterans Association that will be used to support the event held from July 25 to 27.

Funding of up to $4,000 will be provided through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund. Along with Korean War Veterans, the event will honour Canadian Veterans from various wars and conflicts. Activities include a parade and rededication event at the local monument. Local cadets and the general public will also be invited to participate.

"For the past 31 years, an event to honour the Korean War Armistice has provided Veterans with the opportunity to reunite and reflect on their past experiences," said Minister Thompson. "This government is proud to offer support as they gather this year and mark a very significant anniversary."

"The organization holds this event in recognition of all our Veterans," said Mr. Keddy. "Canadians who made sacrifices and contributions for our freedom deserve to be honoured, respected and remembered."

The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding to non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events. Administered through Veterans Affairs Canada's Canada Remembers Program, contributions are made throughout the year and encompass both national and community-based projects.
