Atrion First to Support REACH Annex II Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

Intelligent Authoring V4.2 Enables the Creation of Translated extSDS in All European Languages

MONTREAL--(Marketwire - July 14, 2010) -  Atrion International today announced its support of REACH Annex II Safety Data Sheets (SDS) with the release of its Intelligent Authoring (IA) version 4.2. The new version enables the creation of Extended Safety Data Sheet, supplemented with translated Exposure Scenarios in all European languages and SDS with the new required formats and content to support the Classification, Labeling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation.

"Atrion's swift response to REACH Annex II, a massive new amendment which was published just over a month ago, validates Atrion's ability to meet the ever changing global compliance requirements," said Mrs. Liv Marthe Føllesdal, SDS Coordinator Europe and REACH Core Team Member at Dynea. "As the initial REACH deadline approaches, we are pleased to be working with our trusted partner Atrion to automate the creation of Safety Data Sheets in accordance with the most recent legislation."

REACH Annex II (Commission Regulation No. 453/2010 amending Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006) outlines new details for compliance with regulations specifying format and content of SDS in Europe and the requirements for manufacturers to create Extended Safety Data Sheets.

"With less than six months to go before the initial REACH deadline on December 1, 2010, manufactures are under tremendous pressure to comply with the new requirements for safety data sheets," said Frank Arcadi, Vice President of Product Strategy and Direction at Atrion. "We understand that businesses have little time to dedicate to the creation of the overwhelming amount of documentation required to keep in line with the unpredictable global regulations. Our comprehensive Product Compliance solution provides companies the tools to accelerate their efforts to meet these deadlines."

Atrion's new version of Intelligent Authoring supports the creation and management of Exposure Scenarios based-on ECHA/CEFIC guidelines, and this leveraging translated EuPhraC ES phrases (version 1.0). Exposure Scenarios combine information on measures to take to control risks associated with activities performed with chemicals. In order for this critical information to be understandable and applicable by downstream users, Atrion provides the ability for these exposure scenarios to be translated in a standard format in all European languages. This enables companies to meet REACH's requirement that all registered substances have Safety Data Sheets annexed with Exposure Scenarios.

In addition, REACH Annex II introduces format and content requirements for the Classification, Labeling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation, providing substances manufactures a new SDS template to reclassify and communicate hazards under a new classification scheme. Atrion's IA 4.2 allows for the creation of SDS according to the new CLP Regulation for substances and mixtures, providing manufactures tools to manage these complex new compliance processes.

IA 4.2 also enables the creation of Chinese SDS in line with GB 13690-2009 on classification and hazard communication and GB 15258-2009 on labeling. Both standards consist in the UN GHS implementation in China. With this addition, IA provides global companies the ability to be 'ready to comply' as China, one of the world's largest markets, completes its regulation implementation plan.

Intelligent Authoring

Designed to meet the demanding compliance needs of companies in the formula-based process industry, Atrion's Intelligent Authoring application automates the creation of globally compliant and multi-lingual Material Safety Data Sheets MSDS / SDS, labels and hazard summary sheets as well as documents related to transportation, inventory reports and more.

Intelligent Authoring stores and manages substance and preparation information. It leverages the Intelligent Authoring (IA) DataLink and Transport DataLink update processes to load regulatory and chemical data for each product or substance. Once information is loaded, Atrion's Compliance Engine analyzes products and automatically generates compliant documents that include important regulatory information.
